COHF SPOILER ART: He said WHAT?

What a way to end the night. Cassie Clare revealed a new piece of spoiler art from Cassandra Jean. This is of Sebastian aka Jonathan Morgenstern.

Take a look at what Cassie had to say about this....
Otherwise known as Everyone Seems Too Happy…
Some CoHF spoilery art for you! With Clockwork Princess now out for a month, I’ve decided it’s time to start mixing up answers about Clockwork Princess and cut scenes with a few teasers for the last book in that other series. This teaser isn’t words, it’s art by Cassanda Jean. I won’t make any promises about what it means but I think, unlike the previous piece, and the other previous piece, and oh, that last piece … that you may well not like it. :D

It IS A SPOILER for an actual scene so we want to know what you think. Who could Sebastian be talking about in this? Is the boyfriend really dead or does Sebastian just think he is dead? Is it Jace, Simon, Jordan, Alec or maybe even Luke or Magnus? Ready, set, debate.

International trailer for THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES released

Here it is, Shadowhunters! Roadshow Films has released the brand new international trailer for The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.

The very first thing that jumps out at me was the new clip of Simon talking to Clary. BY THE ANGEL....I HAVE FEELS. I'm assuming this is the big argument between the two besties following Jace and Clary's kiss in the Midnight Flower scene. He says, "I'm the one who's always been there got you...not him." That little tremble in Robert Sheehan's voice, although maybe a product of his Irish accent coming out, makes him sound like he is about to cry. Since that is my fave Simon scene in the book, I'm so thrilled they shared this.

We see a little more of the greenhouse as well and Clary (Lily Collins tells Valentine Morgenstern that he knows nothing about her, but otherwise, most of the scenes have just been remixed. What do you think of the new trailer? Are you psyched for Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower to play Jace and Clay? Head over heels for Robert as Simon? Share your thoughts below.

Rob Sheehan talks Simon with Josh Horowitz

MTV.com reporter Josh Horowitz shared some new set footage of Rob Sheehan today. My favorite quote sounds so very Simon like:

Sheehan says he doesn't envy his Nephilim-portraying counterparts.
"They may look cool in their leather and sexy boots, but they have to come in about two hours before I do every day to get those rune tattoos put on and taken off and put on and taken off, so they get a lot less sleep than I do."

If you are outside of the United States and are unable to access it through the MTV site here is another link:

Here is full text from the article (from the video) for those international peeps that can't watch!
Robert Sheehan intends to make the mundane magical in the big-screen adaptation of Cassandra Clare's "Mortal Instruments," set for an August 23 release. The film centers around Brooklyn teen Clary Fray (Lily Collins), who discovers after her mother's kidnapping that her family descends from a long line of Shadowhunters, a half-human, half-angel race tasked with ridding the world of dangerous demons. When Clary takes up with Shadowhunter Jace Wayland (Jamie Campbell Bower) and the rest of his clan to rescue her mother, best friend Simon (Sheehan) is left the odd man out — quite literally. "Simon, he's the only normal guy in the whole script in the sense that everyone else has some kind of magical ability, so he's very much the normal perspective, the normal eyes, the guy who is kind of asking the questions," Sheehan told MTV News' Josh Horowitz during a visit to the Toronto set last year. "He's thrust into these very abnormal situations. It's quite exciting." Yet, for all the supernatural shenanigans that transpire, Simon also faces a very real teen problem: unrequited love. "It's very clear from the beginning of the story that Simon is quite desperately in love with his friend, who's been his best friend pretty much all their lives," Sheehan explained of his character's affections for Clary. "And it eventually comes to the fore, and they kind of work through it. It's interestingly written in the script because it's kind of just about small conversations that happen between two friends and eventually ends up in, 'Hey, by the way...' And it's been a lovely part, and I'm working with that amateur Lily Collins, and I'm dragging her through the dramatic stuff, you know." And while the leather-clad, weapon-wielding Shadowhunters (which also include Kevin Zegers and Jemima West) are arguably much hipper than nerdy Simon, Sheehan says he doesn't envy his Nephilim-portraying counterparts. "They may look cool in their leather and sexy boots, but they have to come in about two hours before I do every day to get those rune tattoos put on and taken off and put on and taken off, so they get a lot less sleep than I do."

George Blagden, narrator of The Bane Chronicles: The Runaway Queen

George Blagden,
narrator of The Bane Chronicles: The Runaway Queen

Sarah Rees Brennan shared her thoughts on Tumblr about the new narrator for the upcoming second instalment in The Bane Chronicles: The Runaway Queen, George Blagden.

She said, "So, George Blagden is going to be narrating Maureen and Cassie’s wonderful The Runaway Queen!

Just before I left Ireland, I’d seen Les Miserables, in which he played Grantaire, the cynical drunk member of the revolution. He was a favourite of mine from the book (I’m a nerd ;)) and I said unto myself ‘Hey, dude who plays him is great.’

Look, I’m from Ireland, it’s cultural: we love drunks."

CITY OF HEAVENLY FIRE spoilery art by Cassandra Jean

Cassandra Clare shared another CoHF piece of spoilery art to keep us all on our toes until the book's release next year.
Isabelle tugged her tank top back down and glared at her brother. "You don't knock now?" "It's my bedroom!" Alec spluttered.

Cassie added, "Before anyone starts thinking City of Heavenly Fire is an uninterrupted series of makeout scenes, the next spoiler art has no kissing. "

Cassie has been sharing spoilery art created by Cassandra Jean now that The Infernal Devices has come to an end, preparing us for yet another end with The Mortal Instruments series once City of Heavenly Fire sits book shelves next year. She said, "With Clockwork Princess now out for a month, I’ve decided it’s time to start mixing up answers about Clockwork Princess and cut scenes with a few teasers for the last book in that other series. This teaser isn’t words, it’s art by Cassanda Jean."

Charlotte Branwell Shadowhunter Tarot!

Cassandra Clare has share another shadowhunter tarot card by Cassandra Jean with us and it is of the beloved Charlotte Branwell.

Check out what Cassie said about the tarot card:

Today’s Cassandra Jean tarot card! Charlotte gets the card of Justice, here The Leader. Interestingly: “Justice mediates the various claims of right, of morality, of duty. In a world of scarcity, not every claim can be met. Justice, in theory, sets forth a system to judge between the claims. The tarot card is therefore typically closer to the notion of Jurisprudence than to the abstract concept of Justice.” - Wiki

This works well for Charlotte because she, being the leader of the Institute, works within the laws of the Clave to bring about moral change. She also has a lot of personal charisma and smarts, all leadership qualities — recognized, I think, in Clockwork Princess!

Cassie Clare shares a CP2 cut scene

Today Shadowhunters got a Sunday afternoon treat when Cassie Clare shared a cut scene from Clockwork Princess.

Here's what Cassie had to say about it

"People often ask about cut scenes from books, and they can be hard to come by, because a lot of the time we don’t have scenes that we’ve cut out, the way one might in a movie, but rather ones we’ve rewritten.

I decided to post a rewritten scene from CP2 under the spoiler tag. It is the scene that begins around page 468, with Will in Henry’s room. If you put the scenes side by side you can see the differences — the timing of when Charlotte learns a certain piece of information, where Will is when a certain thing happens, the players who are present, and Jem and Will’s attitude toward each other."

Kevin Zegers discusses being his own stunt double in the City of Bones movie

While at WonderCon actor Kevin Zegers (Alec Lightwood) chatted with Hollywood Crush about performing his own stunts in the City of Bones movie. Kevin told HC that he, "...showed up about four weeks before we started, and it went through filming, so then on lunch break we would go and rehearse the fight sequences." He also said that, "Harald Zwart [director] wanted us to do our own stuff, which I think when you watch the movie you can tell. It's sort of great, and you can see that it's us, and it's violence and just as, like, a guy, I saw the new trailer and it looks awesome. It looks like a big action movie, also obviously, the love story and everything are going on and the fantasy stuff. The action stuff looks awesome."

He finished with saying the training and stunt work was "brutal" and "I'm like the old one of the group. The young twenties kids were very spry and bounced back. When we finished I was very tired."

Catch Kevin as Alec Lightwood in The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, in theatres August 23, 2013

Shadowhunter Tarot Cards by Cassandra Jean: Magnus and Alec and Jace and Clary!

Cassandra Clare has decided to share 1 shadowhunter tarot card with us a day until the whole deck has been shown.

So Cassandra Jean has finished the complete Shadowhunter Tarot, so for the next … seventy-something days I’ll be posting a card a day in order, from the first card to the last. Some will be under spoiler cuts; some you’ll have seen before — I’ll explain why each character has the card they have.
The Lovers card! Its meaning is pretty self-explanatory. I thought I’d attach the first version we did, which was just Jace and Clary. For whatever reason it wasn’t working for us. Maybe because Jace looks slightly evil? :) Also I felt like there are so many characters whose relationships could represent unity and love. So we decided to make it a flippable card, which worked either way up, and have Magnus and Alec represent love as well.

Harald Zwart talks City of Bones with Tribute!

Tribute had a chance to chat with the director of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones director Harald Zwart, about filming City of Bones, working with Cassandra Clare and more.

What was your favorite part about filming in Toronto?
It reminded me of a European city, so after filming, there was always a great place to go and have dinner or just walk around the streets of Yorkville. I just really fell in love with Toronto as a city.
Do you believe in “monsters, nightmares and legends whispered around campfires,”—as heard in the movie?
(Laughs) That’s a great question! Well, I do now!
What made you change your mind? Was it the movie?
Yes, after exploring the idea that us humans, we are limited in our perceptions—we don’t see everything that’s around us—I do believe that there’s more between heaven and earth than what we actually have the capacity to take in.
There are so many movie adaptations of novels being released right now, why did you choose to be a part of this one?
I just really liked the tone of the book. It’s got a good blend of humor and it takes the characters seriously. I think the journey of Clary, who is kind of in a detective story, trying to figure out her own mind—I thought it was wonderfully, psychologically complex and I know that young people are so smart that they can easily be challenged by these things, but they’ll all get it.
What makes a novel fit to be turned into a movie?
I can only speak for this one, but the way Cassandra writes is very visual. Once I start reading it, all the images pop into my head and all these wonderful places that she is describing and the portal. It’s just the mood of the whole thing, just lent itself to any visual inspiration. Look at what the fans have been doing for years! It’s clear that this book has inspired young, creative fans all over the world to keep making their own movie posters, their own version of the movie trailer—so they all seem to be very visually inspired by this.
There are a lot of fans of the book who are excited for the movie. Is there any pressure around this book-to-film?
Yeah, I think there is…we try not to feel the pressure, but still respect what we think they are expecting. You can’t really follow the market. I still do what is right for the movie because after all, it’s a movie. And, I think the fans will love it. I think so far, the response has been really good and I feel confident that they’re going to really enjoy what we’ve done to it.
How closely did you work with author Cassandra Clare?
I was very lucky because Cassandra was very easy to work with. She understands filmmaking and she understands that it’s hard to take a book of that size and squeeze it down to a movie. So we were working really closely with each other. She knows her fans very well. I was actually at a book signing, I was invited along—she was very generous to bring me along—and I was surprised see the young fans, but she also has fans of all ages. She has a good, mature—what I mean by mature is that even though they might be in their mid-teens and upwards, they are very developed and smart people. They ask really smart questions and I was thrilled to see that our target group was ranging beyond what we thought it was initially.
The books are pretty long and there is never a dull moment, how did you decide which scenes would be cut?
That’s a really tough one. That’s a process we go through almost up until we have to lock the picture. You know, we go back and forth, we screen it for people, we look at it ourselves and eventually the movie takes a life of its own and in the end, it’s kind of apparent what scenes should stay in. But as you can imagine, if you condense a book with—like you said yourself—never a dull moment, if you condense that down to a movie length, that movie moves along very nicely.
How important were the details of the set, which I heard are absolutely breathtaking?
That is always important to me. I think that if I don’t believe that the place actually exists, then I don’t think people who see the movie would believe it could actually exist. So, I was lucky with a great production designer, who I also used on Karate Kid, Francois Séguin, who is a true artist and we just made sure everything was as if it had been there for hundreds of years and everything was there for a reason.
Would you be interested in directing the entire trilogy?
Yes! If they want me back, I would absolutely be interested in that.
In the future, are there any movie genres you would like to take on?
I wouldn’t mind slowly moving into a more science fiction-oriented direction and I would love to sink my teeth into any Star Wars spin-off franchise, that would be fun to do.
Is there anything you would like to add about the movie?
I just think people will be really surprised. I think middle-aged men will enjoy the movie. It’s a thrill. We had a great screening where the boys said it was plenty action for them and not too much of what they call the schmaltzy romance. And then the girls were vice versa, they had plenty of what they wanted to see with relationships and they really enjoyed the action. I think we’ve just got a really good balance.
We have 4 months until we will finally be able to see The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones in theaters on August 23.

ICYMI: TBC: What Happened In Peru reaches No.4

The Bane Chronicles: What Really Happened in Peru debuted in the number four spot on The New York Times Best Sellers list. Cassie Clare took a moment on Tumblr to thank all her fans for their support.

A message from Cassie:

Thank you guys! I’m so excited. I didn’t know how a project just about Magnus, especially one that was co-authored and e-book only, would go, so I am so grateful to you for trusting me, Sarah and Maureen and coming along with us for Magnus’ story!
Mortal Instruments is #2 on the bestseller list and ID is #7 — I don’t even know what to think. Mostly I just feel extremely humbled and grateful! Thank you!!

Jonathan Rhys Meyers talks Dracula

Hypable posted an interview with Jonathan Rhys Meyers where he talks about his upcoming NBC series Dracula. He had this to say about portraying Dracula:
“I have to make him diabolical and erotic at the same time and let it pass between these two things so that it’s a balance between, ‘Oh my God, I’m really repulsed by this but I can’t stop watching.’”

What I think is really great thing about this quote is it further supports what JRM has said before about his dedication to the characters he plays.  I believe he will bring those same elements to the table as Valentine.  I can't wait to see how he does!

What do you think he will be like as Valentine?

Unofficial MORTAL INSTRUMENTS Score by Sam Cushion to be released on May 7th!

In February 2012, Sam Cushion released THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS inspired song called City of Bones. The song inspired him to wrote a whole THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS album titled "The Mortal Instruments Music Project Part 1: Shaodwhunter."

The album is to be released on May 7th and is now available for Pre-order for only $5.

Check out a song from the album:

Music Monday #26: "Where Did the Angels Go" by Papa Roach

Even though this song deals more about personal demons, I thought that the song "Where Did the Angels Go" by Papa Roach would be a great song for The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones soundtrack.

.

I've seen this band two or three times, and they are a personal fave of my twelve-year-old daughter. They come to Arkansas two or three times a year, so this band has a soft spot in my heart. I'd like to say I have someone from the book when I hear this. I guess maybe Alec is the one I'd characterize in this song. He harbors such frustration and angst in the first book. He detests and distrusts Clary, is mad at Jace and is confused by his feelings. I honestly was so mad at him in the first book. I didn't like him much at all (sorry Kevin - I'm glad your character gets with Magnus and gets over himself.)

Anyway, speaking of Magnus.... I also found a brand new Papa Roach song that reminds me soooo much of Magnus Bane called "Leader of the Broken Hearts". Even though it doesn't exactly match up with COB, I thought I would add this so you Shadowhunters could take a listen. It speaks of risking everything and still surviving. I sort of think of what Magnus does in general to protect his wayward Shadowhunters. Take a listen.

Tell me what you think of these music picks and let me know if you have any song choices for Music Monday in the comments below or via @TMI_Institute on Twitter.

Shadowhunter Tarot Card Day 2: Magnus Bane

Cassandra Clare has been sharing Shadowhunter Tarot cards with us for a few months now. She will now be sharing one Shadowhunter Tarot a day for 84 days. On Wednesday she shared the card of Magnus Bane.
Cassandra Jean has finished the complete Shadowhunter Tarot, so for the next … eighty-four? days I’ll be posting a card a day in order, from the first card to the last. Some will be under spoiler cuts; some you’ll have seen before — I’ll explain why each character has the card they have. Today is day 2.

This card corresponds to the Magician card. Magnus is the Magician, well — for obvious reasons! Many have asked why Magnus has a halo. He doesn’t: the sign over his head is the infinity sign. It is meant to signify the infinite nature of magic and comes from the original Rider-Waite Tarot. I like to think it symbolizes here that Magnus’ life is infinite as well.

Look closely for Chairman Meow, the Book of the White, and Woolsey’s snuffbox!

What is your favorite thing about the card featuring the High Warlock of Brooklyn?

Jesse Williams talks narrating 'THE BANE CHRONICLES' audiobook!

Jesse Williams was chosen to narrate the first installments of The Bane Chronicles, What Really Happened in Peru. Hollywood Crush was able to sit down with him and talk about his experience narrating, trying something new and more. He also talks what he loves about our favorite warlock, Magnus Bane.

Check out what he had to say in the video below:

And in addition to praising the great writing in "The Bane Chronicles," Jesse also said that he got a real kick out of the book's main man: Magnus Bane, the cavalier warlock who cameos in every book from Cassanda Clare's Shadowhunter series. (Hint: For the serious actor, it's the character's "devil-may-care attitude" that won him over.) Want to hear all Jesse's thoughts on his first outing in the audiobook world? You know what to do!

Fan cast favorite for TID a fan of the books!

We, here at The Institute, have talked a great many times about our dream cast for The Infernal Devices.  My absolute favorite for Tessa is Sarah Bolger and today she RT and responded to us!

You may recognize Sarah Bolger from her role as Mary Tudor on The Tudors, and Princess Aurora on Once Upon a Time. She was also in The Spiderwick Chronicles.

Set Photo from TMI Movie Re-shoots

Thanks to TMI PH a photo was taken from Friday during The Mortal Instruments re-shoot in Toronto. Based on the photo it looks like Jamie Campbell Bower, Lily Collins, & Robert Sheehan's stunt double are re-shooting the "you killed two cops" scene from the trailer. According to TMI PH, they filmed this scene very quickly and were packed up by Friday evening.

the TLH characters
I know TLH is a loooong way off, but is there any possible way we could get some slight physical/personality descriptions of the main characters, kind of like you did for TDA? Pretty pretty pretty please?!? :) — onemustalwaysbecarefulofbooks

Remember I’m not checking my fanmail box any more - in fact my husband has set it up so I can’t even get into it. Weird but true. I don’t ask about his magical computer powers. So I’m just working through drafts in my draft box and then I’ll be done, but in the meantime, as for illustrations of the TLH characters…

I have a few in the form of Cassandra Jean’s Tarot cards. Spoilers below…

One of the people pictured is one of the other people’s parabatai.

Izzy (Jemima West), Simon (Robert Sheehan) and Clary (Lily Collins) have snagged a spot in EW's Summer Preview issue.

In the article Lily speaks about being a fan of the book series before being cast as Clary Fray and thus the importance of doing Clary justice in portraying her because she felt so close to Clary having read City of Bones. She said, “I really hope I did Clary justice, because I’m a fan too. I have high expectations of my literary heroines.”

Jamie Campbell Bower also discussed his role as Jace as well as negative reactions to his portraying the snarky beloved shadowhunter, he said,“I had to sit back and assess why I was doing this role and it’s because I love it.”

Cassandra Clare sounded off on fan reactions to Jamie as Jace saying, “I know intellectually when there’s a really strong reaction about someone being cast, it’s great, because it means people care. I’ve seen Jamie play Jace and he’s perfect.”

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, hits theatres August 23.

Cover Reveal: THE BANE CHRONICLES: What Really Happened in Peru!

We have been waiting to see teh cover of the first installment of The Bane Chronicles for a long time and Entertainment Weekly's Shelf Life has revealed it.

Entertainment Weekly also interviewed Cassandra Clare, Sarah Rees Brennan and Maureen Johnson.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: First thing’s first: How did you come up with the idea for The Bane Chronicles?

MAUREEN JOHNSON:
We always have jokes about each other’s books, and I have my designs on several of Cassie’s characters. It started over a long series of jokes like about what we would do.
SARAH REES BRENNAN: I came in a little later. Maureen and Cassie were chatting about several different adventures that characters could have had. Then we were all in France together when we started telling Magnus stories to each other.
CASSANDRA CLARE: We’d all rented this house [in France], and it had one really big fancy room that we couldn’t possibly use. We were sort of gingerly sitting in there, and then we started making jokes about Magnus and what he would think of the room. Maureen had one about Magnus during the French Revolution. Sarah had her theories about why Magnus was really banned from Peru, and it sort of expanded. I said, “It’s really a shame that we couldn’t write these as a series of ongoing stories, because it’s not really a novel format. It’s more of a series of interconnected short stories.” That was when we first started talking about it seriously.
W
hy did you decide on 10 installments?

CLARE:
We had the realization that the best home for a project like this was probably the Internet because it allows for extremely non-traditional publishing formats. Then we started to buckle down and talk about what the stories would be and how they would be written. Since there’s three of us and we’re writing each story — Maureen’s writing half, Sarah’s writing half, I’m writing half along — it seemed fair to split them five and five.

Each installment is written by just two of you. How did you decide who would write what?

BRENNAN: When we started talking about it, it became clear what we were most interested in. I’d be like, “Well what about the other Mortal characters? What about Raphael?” What if he and Magnus had a history? And sometimes the stories we planned to write take a dramatic turn. Cassie, Maureen, and I were just on tour together, and a lot of people were asking about the characters in The Infernal Devices. Cassie and I got to talking about it on the bus, and we’re like, “Well, this could be a Bane Chronicle and then we had to break the news to our editor that we had a different Bane Chronicle!
JOHNSON: A lot of it did happen in that room in France, and it did feel like the right setting for this — the place to be doing this crazy project. We talked a lot about time periods because we had so many to choose from. We went in like it was a smorgasbord and said, “We have four or five hundred years of history to play with. What are some awesome settings since we can do anything? Where should we go?”

What can you tease about What Really Happened in Peru?

CLARE:
There’s a dropped mention in one of the [Mortal Instrument] books that Magnus is banned from the entire country of Peru, and he never says why. So this is the story of… I don’t want to spoil Magnus’ banning! But it actually covers a lot of centuries of Magnus’ visits to Peru.
BRENNAN: I do not know an obscene amount about Peruvian history. So I’d be looking at it and find that in one century Peru had this huge piracy problem. Magnus and pirates, obviously! And in another century there were confidence tricksters going all around preying on travelers, so what if Magnus met a confidence trickster? That sort of thing.

It was recently announced that Grey’s Anatomy star Jesse Williams will narrate the audiobook version. How did that come about?

BRENNAN:
Jesse Williams is so amazing, so I feel super lucky to get him…. He’s too handsome! [Laughs]
CLARE: I was like, “Wow, too bad you can’t see him when he talks!” [Laughs] We gave Simon & Schuster a massive list of our favorite actors and people we really liked. We were like, “Well these are people we really like and think would be great.” The different stories have different moods and different styles. [Simon & Schuster] came back to us with a couple different people and one of them was Jesse…. I think it was Sarah’s idea of having a different narrator for each section. We didn’t want to position the narrator as Magnus telling the story. We wanted to position them each as a narrator telling the story about Magnus.

So each installment is going to have a different narrator? Do you know who else might participate?

CLARE: It’s still going to be switched out for each installment is my understanding. And I know people whose names we threw in the basket. I don’t know if they’re going to do it or not.

Who did you suggest?

BRENNAN: Are we allowed to say?
CLARE: I guess we probably could. We can be like, “Hey call me!” We threw in a bunch of different people who we thought would have really great comic timing, like Alan Cumming. For the ones that are set in England, we were interested in having British readers, so we threw in John Barrowman since he has a nice British voice and has also played one of the more better-known bisexual male characters in media. We thought he could have some fun with Magnus and his romantic life.
BRENNAN: I don’t know if we’re going to get them.
CLARE: They’re short stories so it’s kind of nice. We can go out to people with pretty busy schedules and be like, it’s only four hours of your time. It’s not a huge commitment.
JOHNSON: Yeah, just come in for a morning!

Are you excited to read The Bane Chronicles? Remember it will be available in e-book format on April 16th.
