December Calendar portraits and Christmassy snippet from City of Heavenly Fire

Cassie Clare took to Tumblr on Christmas Day to share some new artwork from Cassandra Jean's December Calendar and a very cute Christmassy snippet from City of Heavenly Fire featuring Clary and Simon. Check it all out below!

The Frays had never been a religiously observant family, but Clary loved Fifth Avenue at Christmas time. The air smelled like sweet roasted chestnuts, and the window displays sparkled with silver and blue, green and red. This year there were fat round crystal snowflakes attached to each lamppost, sending back the winter sunlight in shafts of gold[B1] . Not to mention the huge tree at Rockefeller Center. It threw its shadow across them as she and Simon draped themselves over the gate at the side of the skating rink, watching tourists fall down as they tried to navigate the ice.

Clary had a hot chocolate wrapped in her hands, the warmth spreading through her body. She felt almost normal—this, coming to Fifth to see the window displays and the tree, had been a winter tradition for her and Simon for as long as she could remember.

“Feels like old times, doesn’t it?” he said, echoing her thoughts as he propped his chin on his folded arms.

She chanced a sideways look at him. He was wearing a black topcoat and scarf that emphasized the winter pallor of his skin. His eyes were shadowed, indicating that he hadn’t fed on blood recently. He looked like what he was—a hungry, tired vampire.

Well, she thought. Almost like old times. “More people to buy presents for,” she said. “Plus, the always traumatic what-to-buy-someone-for-the-first-Christmas-after-you’ve-started-dating question.”

“What to get the Shadowhunter who has everything,” Simon said with a grin.

“Jace mostly likes weapons,” Clary sighed. “He likes books, but they have a huge library at the Institute. He likes classical music …” She brightened. Simon was a musician; even though his band was terrible, and was always changing their name—currently they were Lethal Soufflé—he did have training. “What would you give someone who likes to play the piano?”

“A piano.”

“Simon.”

“A really huge metronome that could also double as a weapon?”

Clary sighed, exasperated.

“Sheet music. Rachmaninoff is tough stuff, but he likes a challenge.”

“Now you’re talking. I’m going to see if there’s a music store around here.” Clary, done with her hot chocolate, tossed the cup into a nearby trash can and pulled her phone out. “What about you? What are you giving Isabelle?”

“I have absolutely no idea,” Simon said. They had started heading toward the avenue, where a steady stream of pedestrians gawking at the windows clogged the streets.

“Oh, come on. Isabelle’s easy.”

“That’s my girlfriend you’re talking about.” Simon’s brows drew together. “I think. I’m not sure. We haven’t discussed it. The relationship, I mean.”

“You really have to DTR, Simon.”

“What?”

“Define the relationship. What it is, where it’s going. Are you boyfriend and girlfriend, just having fun, ‘it’s complicated,’ or what? When’s she going to tell her parents? Are you allowed to see other people?”

Simon blanched. “What? Seriously?”

“Seriously. In the meantime—perfume!” Clary grabbed Simon by the back of his coat and hauled him into a cosmetics store that had once been a bank. It was massive on the inside, with rows of gleaming bottles everywhere. “And something unusual,” she said, heading for the fragrance area. “Isabelle isn’t going to want to smell like everyone else. She’s going to want to smell like figs, or vetiver, or—”

“Figs? Figs have a smell?” Simon looked horrified; Clary was about to laugh at him when her phone buzzed. It was her mother.

where are you? It’s an emergency.

Cassandra Clare and Cassandra Jean have joined together to create a calendar filled with characters from The Mortal Instruments, The Infernal Devices, The Dark Artifices, and 'THL' series. 

Clare and Jean have not come up with an official name for the calendar but Clare has come up with Men of the Shadowhunter Universe. We're loving that title!

Clare just posted some more photos from the calendar and this time the characters are from her upcoming series, TLH. Check out the photos of Matthew Fairchild and his parabatai, James Herondale the below!

Cassandra Clare talks The Midnight Heir, TLH and more

Cassie took to her tumblr to answer some questions, one regarding the latest installment of The Bane Chronicles, The Midnight Heir, and the future still name unknown "TLH" series that will take place after the events of The Infernal Devices.

New Shadowhunter Tarot Card: The Dark Artifices Spoiler!

Cassandra Clare shared another one of Cassandra Jean's Shadowhunter tarot cards on her tumblr account. The new tarot card is a Dark Artifices spoiler.

On her tumblr post, Cassie also explains the concept of this new tarot card:

So Cassandra Jean has finished the complete Shadowhunter Tarot, so for the next … seventy-something days I’ll be posting a card a day (okay, maybe not every day — I tend to get distracted!)  in order, from the first card to the last. Some will be under spoiler cuts; some you’ll have seen before — I’ll explain why each character has the card they have. 

We’ve moved on from the Major Arcana to the minor Arcana — the first suit is the suit of Rings, which takes the place of the suit of Pentacles. The Five of Rings is the Blackthorn ring. It shows the Blackthorn family, TDA-era, in all their glory. Tiberius looking crabby as usual, Julian messing around, Mark being serious. 

The Five of Pentacles  (Rings here) can often represent going forward after suffering a loss.

I wonder what loss the Blackthorn family is suffering from. I guess we will have to wait until March 2015 when the first novel of the series is released!

Will, Jem and Tessa Shadowhunter Tarots!

Cassandra Clare has shared more of Cassandra Jean's tarot cards with is. Below are the Will, Jem and Tessa Shadowhunter Tarot cards.

So Cassandra Jean has finished the complete Shadowhunter Tarot, so for the next … seventy-something days I’ll be posting a card a day in order, from the first card to the last. Some will be under spoiler cuts; some you’ll have seen before — I’ll explain why each character has the card they have.

I was going to post a card a day but I am several days behind, so these three cards go up together since they fit together thematically.

Will gets the Hanged Man which symbolizes someone caught in a bad situation between impossible choices.

Jem gets Temperance, which means balance, and can mean the blending of opposites.

And Tessa gets the Star, which is an otherworldly card, symbolizing magic. It also symbolizes love, vulnerability and hope.

These cards have been posted before but it’s interesting to reevaluate them again in the light of Clockwork Princess, thank you Cassandra Jean!

This teaser isn’t words, it’s art by Cassanda Jean. I won’t make any promises about what it means but I think, unlike the previous piece,and the other previous piece,and oh, that last piece … that you may well not like it. :D

It IS A SPOILER for an actual scene so we want to know what you think. Who could Sebastian be talking about in this? Is the boyfriend really dead or does Sebastian just think he is dead? Is it Jace, Simon, Jordan, Alec or maybe even Luke or Magnus? Ready, set, debate.

Cassandra Clare shared another CoHF piece of spoilery art to keep us all on our toes until the book's release next year.

Isabelle tugged her tank top back down and glared at her brother. "You don't knock now?" "It's my bedroom!" Alec spluttered.

Cassie added, "Before anyone starts thinking City of Heavenly Fire is an uninterrupted series of makeout scenes, the next spoiler art has no kissing. "

Cassie has been sharing spoilery art created by Cassandra Jean now that The Infernal Devices has come to an end, preparing us for yet another end with The Mortal Instruments series once City of Heavenly Fire sits book shelves next year. Charlotte Branwell Shadowhunter Tarot!

Cassandra Clare has share another shadowhunter tarot card by Cassandra Jean with us and it is of the beloved Charlotte Branwell.

Check out what Cassie said about the tarot card:

Today’s Cassandra Jean tarot card! Charlotte gets the card of Justice, here The Leader. Interestingly: “Justice mediates the various claims of right, of morality, of duty. In a world of scarcity, not every claim can be met. Justice, in theory, sets forth a system to judge between the claims. The tarot card is therefore typically closer to the notion of Jurisprudence than to the abstract concept of Justice.” - Wiki

This works well for Charlotte because she, being the leader of the Institute, works within the laws of the Clave to bring about moral change. She also has a lot of personal charisma and smarts, all leadership qualities — recognized, I think, in Clockwork Princess!

So Cassandra Jean has finished the complete Shadowhunter Tarot, so for the next … seventy-something days I’ll be posting a card a day in order, from the first card to the last. Some will be under spoiler cuts; some you’ll have seen before — I’ll explain why each character has the card they have. 

The Lovers card! Its meaning is pretty self-explanatory. I thought I’d attach the first version we did, which was just Jace and Clary. For whatever reason it wasn’t working for us. Maybe because Jace looks slightly evil? :) Also I felt like there are so many characters whose relationships could represent unity and love. So we decided to make it a flippable card, which worked either way up, and have Magnus and Alec represent love as well.

Shadowhunter Tarot Card Day 2: Magnus Bane

Cassandra Clare has been sharing Shadowhunter Tarot cards with us for a few months now. She will now be sharing one Shadowhunter Tarot a day for 84 days. On Wednesday she shared the card of Magnus Bane.

Some will be under spoiler cuts; some you’ll have seen before — I’ll explain why each character has the card they have. Today is day 2.

 



 This card corresponds to the Magician card. Magnus is the Magician, well — for obvious reasons! Many have asked why Magnus has a halo. He doesn’t: the sign over his head is the infinity sign. It is meant to signify the infinite nature of magic and comes from the original Rider-Waite Tarot. I like to think it symbolizes here that Magnus’ life is infinite as well.

Look closely for Chairman Meow, the Book of the White, and Woolsey’s snuffbox!

Now that The Infernal Devices series is over Shadowhunters are anxiously awaiting the release of Cassandra Clare's final book in The Mortal Instruments series. Cassie took to her Tumblr to share a spoilery picture drawn by Cassandra Jean.

With Clockwork Princess now out for a month, I’ve decided it’s time to start mixing up answers about Clockwork Princess with a few teasers for the last book in that other series. This teaser isn’t words, it’s art. I won’t make any promises about what it means but I think you’ll like it. ;) It IS A SPOILER though, so it’s under a cut.

Cassandra Clare has posted yet another Shadowhunter Tarot card by Cassandra Jean. This one is of Drusilla and Octavian Blackthorn. Cassie also discusses the future of the Shadowhunter Tarots. We will be getting one Shadowhunter Tarot card a day for 84 days.

This card corresponds to the Fool, which can be either 0 or 22 in the Tarot. We decided to do one 0 and one 22. 0 is Drusilla and Octavian Blackthorn who we picked because they symbolize uncorrupted innocence which is an aspect of the Fool card.

New 'TLH' Shadowhunter Tarot cards by Cassandra Jean!

Cassandra Clare recently revealed that she is working on a brand new series with the initial TLH set in 1903. Yesterday she shared 2 new Shadowhunter Tarot cards by Cassamdra Jean, based on TLH.

I know TLH is a loooong way off, but is there any possible way we could get some slight physical/personality descriptions of the main characters, kind of like you did for TDA? Pretty pretty pretty please?!? :) — onemustalwaysbecarefulofbooks

Remember I’m not checking my fanmail box any more - in fact my husband has set it up so I can’t even get into it. Weird but true. I don’t ask about his magical computer powers. So I’m just working through drafts in my draft box and then I’ll be done, but in the meantime, as for illustrations of the TLH characters…

New Luke Garroway and Hodge Starkweather Shadowhunter Tarot cards by Cassandra Jean!

Cassandra Clare has shared two more Shadowhunter Tarot cards by the oh so very talented Cassandra Jean. These two new cards feature Luke Garroway and Hodge Starkweather.

The other cards that were featured were of the rest of the members of Valentine's circle, Jocelyn Fairchild, Amatis and Stephen Herondale, Valentine Morgenstern, Robert Lightwood and Maryse Lightwood.

Here is what Cassie had to say:

The members of Valentine’s Circle, as depicted in Cassandra Jean’s Shadowhunter Tarot. HELLO, young Luke. I asked her why she drew him so hot and she said he was her favorite character. Hidden depths, man.

She also spoke about selling the Shadowhunter Tarot cards:

(I know lots of people have been asking if they can buy these someday — I’m waiting on word from the movie studio. They have the right to merchandise Shadowhunter things, and I don’t, actually. So it depends if they let me. :)
