SHADOWHUNTER WRAP-UP: 'City of Heavenly Fire' snippet, TLH news, and more

There's lots of news in the Shadowhunter fandom and here's a rundown of the latest!

Cassandra Clare shared a very special Valentine with fans: a brand new snippet from City of Heavenly Fire. This snippet features Julian Blackthorn, one of the Los Angeles Institute characters from the highly anticipated series The Dark Artifices.

Take a look:

“Julian,” said Jia, in the same gentle voice, “would you do something for us? Would you take up the Mortal Sword?”
Clary sat up straight. She had held the Mortal Sword: she had felt the weight of it. The cold, like hooks in your skin, dragging the truth out of you. You couldn’t lie holding the Mortal Sword, but the truth, even a truth you wanted to tell, was agony.
“They can’t,” she whispered. “He’s just a kid —“
“He’s the oldest of the kids who escaped the Institute,” Jace said under his breath. “They don’t have a choice.”
Julian nodded, his thin shoulders straight. “I’ll take it.”
Robert Lightwood passed behind the podium then and went to the table. He took up the sword and returned to stand in front of Julian. The contrast between them was almost funny: the big, barrel-chested man and the lanky, wild-haired boy.
Julian reached a hand up and took the sword. As his hand closed around the hilt, he shuddered, a ripple of pain that was quickly forced down. Emma, behind him, started forward, and Clary caught a glimpse of the look on her face — pure fury — before Helen caught at her and pulled her back.
The book is roughly 733 pages, according to Cassie. "There’s no difference between the Walmart edition and any other edition in terms of the story, so you shouldn’t worry about whatever page number they have listed. It’s all the same book."

With all that said, Cassie also revealed that TESSA AND JEM will make an appearance in the book!

Signed copies of COHF at Barnes & Noble

There 2,000 first edition signed copies of City of Heavenly Fire for sale at Barnes & Noble, according to Cassie.
I signed about 2,000 first editions of City of Heavenly Fire for Barnes and Noble (not that the COHF books have been printed yet, but I signed the first pages and they’ll be bound in. So you’ll be able to order them from B&N soon. I’ll put up the link when I have it. Every one will also be stamped with a rune stamp, and some of them — totally randomly — have my sketch of Church in them. That’s sort of a lottery, whether you end up with one of those, though. And you can always get signed books of mine from Books of Wonder.
There will be extras in both the first editions and regular prints, but with a little bit more for fans to rave about! Cassie says:
Well, all the first editions of City of Heavenly Fire have a portrait on the inside of Jace, Simon, Maia, Alec and Isabelle done by Cliff Nielson, who does all my covers. Only the hardcover first editions sold by Simon and Schuster in the US and Canada will have that portrait on the inside cover. All the books will also come with a note from one of the characters in the end that is handwritten and printed, and leads into the Dark Artifices series. That’s every book, not just the first editions. As to how to buy first editions — basically first editions are all the copies in a publisher’s first print run. They last until they sell out. So the earlier you order a book the more likely you are to get one.

Bane Chronicles book set for print in November

Cassie revealed that the first edition of The Bane Chronicles will hit stands in November 2014. Cassie says:
Anticipatory and terrified is exactly how you should be! :) Yep, the Bane Chronicles will be released in print — the current publication date for the print edition of the Bane Chronicles is November 11 of this year.
The newest story in the series, The Course of True Love (and First Dates), comes out this Tuesday.

Name of 'TLH' project to be released

On February 25…
You’ll be finding out what TLH stands for.

HAPPY BELATED VALENTINES DAY FROM CASSANDRA JEAN!

Naturally, I will draw Valentine on Valentine’s Day! (The Mortal Instruments written by @CassieClare)
The flowers on the bottom are called Shooting Stars (or falling stars) and the flower on the top are called Hoya’s and look remarkably like…stars! For Morgenstern.

Cassandra Clare Talks About Parabatais, TLH, CoHF, and MORE!

Cassandra Clare took to her tumblr account to answer a few questions a fan sent her through an email. There are some great questions that fan asked and vital answers from Cassie. You can read the whole thing below:
“hi cassie! i have a couple questions that i figured I’d ask through email because its always really hectic on twitter so:- can parabatai be love interests? i thought they couldn’t but emma/julian are right? that always kinda confused me- so you’re writing the dark artifices, TLH, & are you writing another shadowhunter book aside from those as well?- are we gonna see tessa/will/ jem in cohf?”Yes, twitter has become a bit of a madhouse - I can only get on for a few minutes, and then there are so many questions I can’t follow them (usually about things I know nothing about and can’t influence, like what countries there will be movie premieres in and where the cast goes) and then I run away. I am a a wuss, I guess! But if I don’t answer you on Twitter, it’s not personal!“- can parabatai be love interests? i thought they couldn’t but emma/julian are right? that always kinda confused me”The Clave says no. You’re not supposed to be romantically involved with yourparabatai. In Clockwork Prince, one of the plot points is a past pair of parabatai, one of whom committed suicide because he’d fallen in love with his parabatai and was afraid of the secret being exposed. The Clave has their reasons for this old Law. However, like pretty much every cultural/social law decreeing that people can’t fall in love or can’t marry, plenty of people break it. It’s not like no priest has ever fallen in love with anyone. And Emma and Julian’s relationship isn’t defined yet - not even by me! We know there is probably going to be an issue of romantic interest, but they are not a couple at the beginning of the books. They might never be a couple. We will see.- so you’re writing the dark artifices, TLH, & are you writing another shadowhunter book aside from those as well?My plan at the moment is to do five Shadowhunter series, total. I don’t know if I’ll do any series in the Shadowhunter world beyond that. I don’t know why five exactly — maybe because one of my major literary idols has always been Tamora Pierce and she did five series set in Tortall. :) Maybe I think I have five stories to tell in this world. Maybe I’ll get to the end and want to tell more. Maybe not — I have a stockpile of other worlds and stories in my head; I’m writing one of them by writing Magisterium now, but there are many others. There is a special sort of enjoyment in developing stories in a created world, because you can take the rules you yourself have invented, and bend them or break them. You can create connections and history — the story of Isabelle’s ruby necklace stretches back all the way to Vampires, Scones and Edmund Herondale. Then again, with a brand new world, you get to make everything up again. It’s like: brand-new baby or adorable five-year old? They’re both good.
(The five Shadowhunter series are TiD, TLH, TMI, TDA, and very far down the road, TWP. Don’t even ask about that one! It’s too far in the future! There are other Shadowhunter projects like The Bane Chronicles and the graphic novel project about the Circle, currently in planning stages and known as TST, but I’m not counting them: I’m only counting book series/trilogies written solely by me.)- are we gonna see tessa/will/ jem in cohf?”I cannot say, because those are major spoilers. All I will say is that nobody from TiD is going to be a major character in CoHF because it’s too confusing and too spoilery for the mass majority of TMI readers, who have not read TiD. (There are also plenty of TiD readers who won’t read TMI — historical can be tricky; people either won’t read it at all, or will only read it, a lot of the time.) TMI is still Clary’s story at heart. I think for TiD readers there will be a lot of interesting connections, and the fact that Tessa is still alive is not a huge secret (we saw her in CoG) but nothing in CoHF is going to give away the ending of the Clockwork series to people who haven’t read it, and that includes who Tessa ends up with. Keep that in mind, and hopefully that can help shape expectations.
Wow Cassie is a very busy woman! Five Shadowhunter series in total plus a graphic novel and another series (Magisterium) to come! Well all I can say is I'm thrilled and cannot wait to read the next series to come!

Jem and Tessa Shadowhunter Tarot card by Cassandra Jean!

Cassandra Clare has shared yet another Shadowhunter Tarot card on her Tumblr by Cassandra Jean.

WARNING: THE PICTURES BELOW CONTAINS CLOCKWORK PRINCESS SPOILERS!

Okay, I don’t know if I missed it, but I have not seen a Jem and Tessa tarot card. If there is one and you just aren’t showing it to us yet, I AM NOT ABOVE BEGGING. So, pretty please with a Benedict Cumberbatch on top will you showit to us? What if I bring you cookies? — team62forever

Hey Cassie! I was just wondering if there were any Jem and Tessa drawings or with them on a tarot card? I’ve been loving all the Will and Tessa ones but I kind of wanted more of Jessa. Thanks for reading (and answering if you do..) — consulfairchilds

I was saving the Jem and Tessa one because it is VERY SPOILERY. It doesn’t ONLY spoil events in Clockwork Princess, it spoils events in future as yet unwritten books.
Are you really sure you want to look?

By Cassandra Jean of course. Ten of runes: the wedded union rune. (No runes on Tessa, as Tessa’s skin does not bear runes. When she married Will, she wore the runes on a bracelet. On their thirtieth anniversary he had the bracelet redesigned with pearls to commemorate the years.)
As for this scene, I can’t tell you when it takes place. Just that it does. Could be during CoHF, or TDA, or between the two. It could be a written scene, or just something that happens. They are surrounded by daisies here, which symbolize loyal love and patience, and as you can see, Tessa is wearing Will’s bracelet still.
As for all the people who’ve written to ask if Jem and Tessa have kids, or if Tessa decides to be mortal — they could have kids. Jem is mortal. The kids would be mortal. This is a world where becoming mortal if you are not, or immortal if you are not, is nearly impossible and carries a huge price. It makes life not easy, but as Logan Echolls said, they don’t write songs about the ones that come easy. :)

Do you like the new Shadowhunter Tarot?

Two new Shadowhunter Tarots featuring Jem and Emma Carstairs and Brother Zachariah!

After giving us Jace and Alec, Simon and Isabelle and Warlocks cards, Cassandra Clare has shared two more Tarot cards by Cassandra Jean on her Tumblr. She also talks Clockwork Princess and TLH.

WARNING: THE BELOW MATERIAL CONTAINS CLOCKWORK PRINCESS SPOILERS.

Below is what Cassie had to say about Clockwork Princess and new series TLH:

In fact it was really fun for me to come up with a family tree that was massively misleading. Remember, family trees are found objects — they contain only as much information as whoever drew them had. Secret marriages, arranged marriages, people being secretly dead, people being secretly other people: the family tree doesn’t reflect any of that. In fact, some of the most important characters (One of whom is a certain JH’s parabatai) don’t appear on the family tree at all.

In fact, when the Bane Chronicle is released that takes place during/around TLH*, I think everyone is going to be like: “HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE? IT DOES NOT MATCH UP.” But it does, in the end…

*TLH: the series that comes between TID and TMI, that takes place around 1903, that I have stated the acronym for (TLH) but not the full name, that has no deadline or planned publication dates because while I am having lots of fun working on the idea, I don’t want to work to deadline right now so that means it’s a WIP.

Also, Sarah would like you to know that TLH stands for The Largest Hamburger.

More TLH stuff, spoilery, under the cut.

“I just wanted to say how amazing your books are, and how much I love them! All of your writing has made me look at love in a different way, and thank you so much for that. But I just wanted to ask if we would be seeing Will Herondale (as his older self) at any time in your new series of books TLH because it is set in the early 1900’s? — shaliwali”

Yes. Will is James and Lucie’s father and James and Lucie (among others — Christopher and Grace and Cordelia and Alastair and Colin and Matthew and Charles and Jesse) are the main characters in the book. So of course, we see their parents. In fact, in one of the upcoming Bane Chronicles — the one that features James — you’ll get a sense of how much we will see them.

“Hi Miss Clare, I’ve been a big fan of your books for years and could barely wait to pick up The Clockwork Princess, so much so that I tanked the whole thing in around 6 hours (partially also due to university commitments). What I’m wondering however, has to do with the shadowhunter family tree on the book sleeve. Many of the family lines, including that of gideon’s lightwood line, come with the statement “see extended lightwood family tree.” Will we ever get to see the extended family trees? I would personally love to get more insight into shadow hunter families. Thanks for writing — little-mollusk”

Aaaand that is precisely why I didn’t include a lot of family trees: the Blackthorns, the Carstairs, the Fairchilds, the Lightwoods. I think having some information is good but not all of it. :) Maybe after TDA and TLH, I’ll do the whole family trees.

Hi Cassie! I was just wondering. It seems like we will be getting plenty of Jessa in the upcoming books - Heavenly Fire, especially. Will be able to also have more Wessa? I’d love to know more about the time they were married…Thank you!!! — literary-darling”

Well, TLH will be all Will and Tessa, married, because it takes place in 1903, so — Will and Tess are in their thirties and you get to see plenty of the loving couple that they are. There’s also a whole Bane Chronicle, the one about James Herondale, where you get a sense of what they’re like.

A lot of people have asked about whether Jem will be in CoHF or in TDA — as he clearly remains Brother Zachariah through City of Lost Souls — and unfortunately I can’t say much (there’s no reason to assume Jessa in CoHF. COHF might well be before the epilogue of CP2). Most of the things I could say about where Jem and Tessa will appear again and what they will be doing are spoilery. However I will show you two cards that Cassandra Jean drew that aren’t being used in the final tarot deck. The first is just Brother Zachariah — she drew him before she knew who he was, so now she says she has to redraw him. Here he is though, months January through December of the Hot Silent Brothers calendar :)

And this — it doesn’t take place anywhere specific, which is why Jem’s hair color is off, it’s a sort of symbolic image — but it’s a nice idea, isn’t it?

Music Monday #22: The definitive Jem Carstairs playlist

I have a really hard time picking songs that remind me of Jem Carstairs, my very favorite character in The Infernal Devices series. A lot of times it involves listening to a song that reminds me too much of him and then I worry that Cassie will kill him. I then have to go sob in a corner. It's really an ugly moment.

Nevertheless, I have picked a few songs and left it to the Shadowhunter fandom to help me get through this. I'll start with a song from the Broadway musical Wicked. I know this is sung by a girl, but the lyrics remind me so much of Jem and Tessa. I guess this is the song I choose if he doesn't survive this book. Grab your tissues.. .this song, like all the ones on this play list, is a tearjerker.

THEORY TUESDAY: Bloggers discuss predictions on Jem Carstairs

We all have very anxious feels about what will happen in the final Infernal Devices book Clockwork Princess. So, in a way to hash out the theories (reader bewarned if you haven't read the series... we may talk spoilers), I've enlisted the help of some of my favorite bloggers (@TMIShadwhunters, @TMI_colombia, @TMIspanishnews, @shannoncatori, @TMICanada and @ThePaisleyOwl) to discuss our predictions and debate some of your favorite theories.

This week we take on final theories for Jem Carstairs:

Shannon Catori, TMI Institute:
Honestly, as much as I love Will, I also love Jem and my love for each of them has nothing to do with Tessa. Ultimately I want both of them to be happy and yes they both would be extremely happy to have a life with Tessa, but that happiness also dives deeper than Tessa because of the love they have for each other and also the lives they lead separately.

Unfortunately, I think Jem will die, but because he wants to. I think he will no longer want to battle his illness or have to feed his addiction to survive. He's lived a life filled with happiness, he's loved and was loved by his friends and by Tessa and I think he'll be ready to give up the fight and live the last few moments of his life surrounded by those he cherishes.

Amber, TMI Institute:
Jem Carstairs is by far the fictional love of my life, and I dread what will happen to him in Clorkwork Princess. I've heard several theories, but there are a few main ones I'll cover quickly.

He'll live but be Brother Zachariah ... OR
He'll die to save Tessa and Will ... OR
He'll live and marry another girl.

I desperately hope Cassie will keep him around.*breaks out Kleenex now and grovels*. I'm really scared, based on that latest Shadowhunter Tarot, that my worst fears are correct. I don't even care if he stays with Tessa or not at this point. I just want him to find a happy ending. I mean, there is a Carstairs in the future. There must be some way the lineage lives on....

If he must die, let it be something sweepingly romantic and heroic so we never, ever forget how amazing he would have been if he lived.  There's no good answer that will make me completely happy. There's tragedy afoot I'm afraid.

Celine, TMI Canada:
I can’t decide on whether Jem dies or not.
Scenario A: if Jem does die, it will be a heroic and noble death. He would probably be defending either Tessa or Will. Jem would probably take a bullet/sword in the chest for Tessa/Will.
Scenario B: Jem lives. Although many people think that he becomes a Silent Brother, I don’t think that will be the case. If you’ve read Magnus’s Vow, Magnus seemed to imply that Tessa is somewhat lonely. Eternity is a long time, I just hope that Jem gets a happy life filled with a wife and kid(s).

Satin, TMI Institute:
I am for sure a Jem Carstairs girl. Jem is one of the sweetest fictional guys ever. Sadly, I feel that Jem will die in Clockwork Princess. All I want for Jem Carstairs is for him to truly be happy. If Jem does die my heart will be broken. Lots of people think that he'll become Brother Zachariah. We won't know until we read, but I hope that this is what happens. I don't know what the future holds for Mr. Carstairs, but I believe that whatever happens to him he'll have happiness.

Liliana, TMI Colombia:
Like my friend Lina says, "Will is the man every girl wants but Jem is the man every girl needs". As I said last week, Will is my favorite, but I love Jem too, he's so innocent and pure and cute and talented...
Based on the existence of Emma Carstairs (TDA) I think Jem will survive. Tessa can't have kids (in theory) so my theory about Jem descendants is that Jem will find another girl after all the war against the automatons.
Tessa is the final weapon in Mortmain's plan, and she will sacrifice herself for all the ones she loves, she will die to save the Shadowhunters.
For Will, his friendship with Jem is over his love for Tessa. So I think Will is going to find the cure for Jem but he's going to die in the process .
Maybe someone can have a "happy" have a happy ending ...

Humility, TMI Institute:
Based on Cassie's spoilers for Clockwork Princess, I have a feeling Jem is going to die. Who knows when and how cause Cassie always keeps us guessing. But my guess would be that Jem will die just before the wedding either due to his worsening condition or getting severely injured in a battle.  I don't think he will turn into a Silent Brother, I think Will may though. It is sad thinking that he will die before the wedding but didn't Cassie say Clockwork Princess will be bittersweet? I think Jem's last words would be to Will giving him permission to marry Tessa. I doubt Will will marry Tessa because of his strong friendship with Jem.

Tita, TMI Spanish News:
The only thing I know is that Tessa will survive and is immortal. But Jem.... I'm scared.... He'll suffer a lot... I know it, I just really hope they'll find the cure for him and he'll live a long and happy life But is Cassie who we are talking about here...so again, I'm scared. I think if I keep saying he'll survive it gives me strengh to keep waiting for the book.

Sarah, TMI Institute:
I am very much equally Team Will/Team Jem. As much as I would like to think that perhaps Jem is brother Z, I think he will die. But as Shannon said, I think wants to. He's come to terms with his time being limited, and he very much hates the addiction to keep him alive. I would almost wonder that even if he becomes brother Z if he will still "die" to enter the brotherhood. Much easier to cut ties. I think Wills reaction to Jems death will be the saddest part.

Young Jem Carstairs featured in Shadowhunter Tarot series

Cassandra Jean has once again captured the essence of the vulnerable and lovable Jem Carstairs in the newest in her Shadowhunter Tarot Series.

Here's what Infernal Devices author Cassandra Clare had to say:

JEM MY BABY.

I love Cassandra Jean’s art because she’s so good at capturing character. More in her Shadowhunter Tarot, the six of sword (blades) can mean a long journey, so here is Jem on the way from Shanghai to England.

Cassandra Jean answers questions about the Shadowhunter Tarot (who decides who goes on the cards, who is going to be on which card, whether they’re for sale) here.)

Jem snippet for YA Crush Tourney win

Since Jem won his match in the YA-Sisterhood Crush Tourney 2.0 against Magnus on Friday (please don't fret, Magnus fans, I'm sure he'll be back again next year), Cassandra Clare shared a Jem snippet just for fans!
“Though Will was saying earlier,” Tessa added, “that heroes all come to bad ends, and he could not imagine why anyone would want to be one, anyway.”
“Ah.” Jem’s hand squeezed hers briefly, and then let it go. “Well, Will is looking at it from the hero’s viewpoint, isn’t he? But as for the rest of us, it’s an easy answer.”
“Is it?”
“Of course.” His voice was almost a whisper now. “Heroes endure because we need them. Not for their own sakes. If Will …”

What does this mean for our hero Will? What will become of Jem. We should get a new snippet on Wednesday, August 8th as Jem takes on Will in The Final Four.
