December Calendar portraits and Christmassy snippet from City of Heavenly Fire

Cassie Clare took to Tumblr on Christmas Day to share some new artwork from Cassandra Jean's December Calendar and a very cute Christmassy snippet from City of Heavenly Fire featuring Clary and Simon. Check it all out below!

December Calendar Portraits: The Boys and The Girls.

Christmassy Snippet

The Frays had never been a religiously observant family, but Clary loved Fifth Avenue at Christmas time. The air smelled like sweet roasted chestnuts, and the window displays sparkled with silver and blue, green and red. This year there were fat round crystal snowflakes attached to each lamppost, sending back the winter sunlight in shafts of gold[B1] . Not to mention the huge tree at Rockefeller Center. It threw its shadow across them as she and Simon draped themselves over the gate at the side of the skating rink, watching tourists fall down as they tried to navigate the ice.
Clary had a hot chocolate wrapped in her hands, the warmth spreading through her body. She felt almost normal—this, coming to Fifth to see the window displays and the tree, had been a winter tradition for her and Simon for as long as she could remember.
“Feels like old times, doesn’t it?” he said, echoing her thoughts as he propped his chin on his folded arms.
She chanced a sideways look at him. He was wearing a black topcoat and scarf that emphasized the winter pallor of his skin. His eyes were shadowed, indicating that he hadn’t fed on blood recently. He looked like what he was—a hungry, tired vampire.
Well, she thought. Almost like old times. “More people to buy presents for,” she said. “Plus, the always traumatic what-to-buy-someone-for-the-first-Christmas-after-you’ve-started-dating question.”
“What to get the Shadowhunter who has everything,” Simon said with a grin.
“Jace mostly likes weapons,” Clary sighed. “He likes books, but they have a huge library at the Institute. He likes classical music …” She brightened. Simon was a musician; even though his band was terrible, and was always changing their name—currently they were Lethal SoufflĂ©—he did have training. “What would you give someone who likes to play the piano?”
“A piano.”
“Simon.”
“A really huge metronome that could also double as a weapon?”
Clary sighed, exasperated.
“Sheet music. Rachmaninoff is tough stuff, but he likes a challenge.”
“Now you’re talking. I’m going to see if there’s a music store around here.” Clary, done with her hot chocolate, tossed the cup into a nearby trash can and pulled her phone out. “What about you? What are you giving Isabelle?”
“I have absolutely no idea,” Simon said. They had started heading toward the avenue, where a steady stream of pedestrians gawking at the windows clogged the streets.
“Oh, come on. Isabelle’s easy.”
“That’s my girlfriend you’re talking about.” Simon’s brows drew together. “I think. I’m not sure. We haven’t discussed it. The relationship, I mean.”
“You really have to DTR, Simon.”
“What?”
“Define the relationship. What it is, where it’s going. Are you boyfriend and girlfriend, just having fun, ‘it’s complicated,’ or what? When’s she going to tell her parents? Are you allowed to see other people?”
Simon blanched. “What? Seriously?”
“Seriously. In the meantime—perfume!” Clary grabbed Simon by the back of his coat and hauled him into a cosmetics store that had once been a bank. It was massive on the inside, with rows of gleaming bottles everywhere. “And something unusual,” she said, heading for the fragrance area. “Isabelle isn’t going to want to smell like everyone else. She’s going to want to smell like figs, or vetiver, or—”
“Figs? Figs have a smell?” Simon looked horrified; Clary was about to laugh at him when her phone buzzed. It was her mother.
where are you? It’s an emergency.

READ: City of Heavenly Fire snippet

In a kind gesture to her fans who are patiently awaiting a second surprise promised by The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones star Jamie Bower, author Cassandra Clare tweeted a snippet for the next novel in The Mortal Instruments Series, City of Heavenly Fire.

City of Heavenly Fire snippet
“He’s not feeling well,” Clary said, catching at Simon’s wrist. “We’re going.”
“No,” Simon said. “No, I — I need to talk to him. To the Inquisitor."
Robert reached into his jacket and drew out a crucifix. Clary stared in shock as he held it up between himself and Simon. “I speak to the Night’s Children Council representative, or to the head of the New York clan,” he said. “Not to any vampire who comes to knock at my door —“
Simon reached out and plucked the cross out of Robert’s hand. “Wrong religion,” he said.
Please show Cassie your appreciation by visiting the original post on tumblr and liking/reblogging. What do you think of the snippet?

City of Heavenly Fire snippet!

The wonderful Cassie Clare just gave us a new snippet from the highly anticipated City of Heavenly Fire.

Check out the nee snippet:

City of Heavenly Fire snippet SPOILERS

A moment later, Helen had returned; she was walking slowly now, and carefully, her hand on the back of a thin boy with a mop of wavy brown hair. He couldn’t have been older than twelve, and Clary recognized him immediately.Helen, her hand firmly clamped around the wrist of a younger boy whose hands were covered with blue wax. He must have been playing with the tapers in the huge candelabras that decorated the sides of the nave. He looked about twelve, with an impish grin and the same wavy, bitter-chocolate hair as his sister.

Jules, Helen had called him. Her little brother.

The impish grin was gone now. He looked tired and dirty and frightened. Skinny wrists stuck out of the cuffs of a white mourning jacket whose sleeves were too long for him. In his arms he was carrying a little boy, probably not more than two years old, with the same wavy brown hair that he had; it seemed to be a family trait. The rest of his family wore the same borrowed mourning clothes: following Julian was a brunette girl about ten, her hand firmly clasped in the hold of a boy the same age: the boy had a sheet of tangled black hair that nearly obscured his face. Fraternal twins, Clary guessed. After them came a girl who might have been eight or nine, her face round and very pale between brown braids.

The misery on their faces cut ay Clary’s heart. She thought of her power with runes, wishing that she could create one that would soften the blow of loss. Mourning runes existed, but only to honor the dead, in the same way that love runes existed, like wedding rings, to symbolize the bond of love. You couldn’t make someone love you with a rune, and you couldn’t assuage grief with it, either. So much magic, Clary thought, and nothing to mend a broken heart.

“Julian Blackthorn,” said Jia Penhallow, and her voice was gentle. “Step forward, please.”

Julian swallowed and handed the little boy he was holding over to his sister. He stepped forward, his eyes darting around the room. He was clearly scouring the crowd for someone. His shoulders had just begun to slump when another figure darted out onto the stage. A girl, also about twelve, with a tangle of blond hair that hung down around her shoulders: she wore jeans and a t-shirt that didn’t quite fit, and her head was down, as if she couldn’t bear so many people looking at her. It was clear that she didn’t want to be there — on the stage or perhaps even in Idris — but the moment he saw her, Julian seemed to relax. The terrified look vanished from his expression as she moved to stand next to him, her face ducked down and away from the crowd.

“Julian,” said Jia, in the same gentle voice, “would you do something for us? Would you take up the Mortal Sword?”

Cassie Clare shares new Clockwork Princess snippet for MTV Movie Brawl

Way to go, Shadowhunters! We worked hard and got The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones to a second place finish in the finals of the MTV Movie Brawl 2013.

Cassie shared her appreciation to the fans on her Tumblr account, explaining a little more of what EP Martin Moszkowicz said regarding TMI since it's rare for a new movie to have this type of momentum: "That is, actually, a phenomenal accomplishment, doing that well so early," Cassie said. "Pat yourselves on the backs, love one another, and have a snippet from Clockwork Princess."

Will looked at his sister. “And you don’t care about being a Shadowhunter. How is this: I shall write a letter and give it to you if you promise to deliver it home yourself —and not to return.”

Cecily recoiled; she had many memories of shouting matches with Will, of the china dolls she had owned that he had broken by dropping them out an attic window; but there was also kindness in her memories: the brother who had bandaged up a cut knee, or retied her hair ribbons when they came loose. That kindness was absent from the Will who stood before her now. Her mother had used to cry for the first year or two after Will went; she had said, in Welsh, holding Cecily to her, that they —the Shadowhunters —would “take all the love out of him.” A cold, unloving people, she had told Cecily, who had forbidden her marriage to her husband. What could he want with them, her Will, her little one?

“I will not go,” Cecily said, staring her brother down. “And if you insist that I must, I will —I will —”

The door of the attic slid open and Jem stood silhouetted in the doorway…

So, be proud of yourselves, Shadowhunters and get ready for more amazing things to come!

New 'CITY OF HEAVENLY FIRE' snippet

To give Shadowhunters a little bit more incentive to get the vote out for The Mortal Instruments' City of Bones in the MTV Movie Brawl, Cassandra Clare posted a new snippet from City of Heavenly Fire.

Here's the snippet:

Magnus rolled onto his back and put his feet up on the arm of the sofa. “What do you care if Alec’s miserable?”

“What do I care?” Jace said, so loudly that Chairman Meow rolled off the couch and landed on the floor. “Of course I care about Alec; he’s my best friend, my parabatai. And he’s unhappy. And so are you, by the look of things. Takeout containers everywhere, you haven’t done anything to fix up the place, your cat looks dead —“

“He’s not dead.”

Make sure to go vote in the MTV Movie Brawl. Voting ends at 12:00 pm on Friday. TMI is up against Spring Breakers. If the movie wins, it will either take on Hunger Games: Catching Fire or Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters.

New 'CLOCKWORK PRINCESS' Snippet!

Since we placed 1st in the first round of the MTV Movie Brawl the amazing Cassandra Clare has given us a new Clockwork Princess snippet!

Woo! We placed first in the MTV movie brawl. Very impressive, Shadowhunters.
To celebrate, a snippet from Clockwork Princess — not about Will, Tessa or Jem for a change…
Spoilers.

“Why?” Gabriel asked. “Why are you so sure that Charlotte’s side is the right one?”
“Because our father’s is not,” said Gideon. “Because I know Charlotte. Because I have lived among these people for months and they are good people. Because Charlotte Branwell has been nothing but kind to me. And Sophie loves her.”
“And you love Sophie.”
Gideon’s mouth tensed.
“She’s a mundane and a servant,” said Gabriel. “I don’t know what you expect to come of it, Gideon.”
“Nothing,” Gideon said roughly. “I expect nothing. But the fact that you believe I should shows that our father brought us up to believe that we should do right only if some reward was the result. I will not betray the word I have given Charlotte; that is the situation, Gabriel. If you do not want a part of it, I can send you to live with the Blackthorns. But I will not lie to Charlotte.”
“Yes, you will,” said Gabriel. “We are both going to lie to Charlotte. And I will tell you why.”

What do you guys think of the Gabriel, Gideon and Charlotte filled snippet?

We are very close to the release of Clockwork Princess! Only 63 more days until you will be able to hold it in your hands.

THE BANE CHRONICLES release date may be pushed to April?

It's looking like fans may hvae to wait for The Bane Chronicles to be released. Cassie took to her Tumblr to talk about it. She explains how April may be when The Bane Chronicles would be released.

"So basically we got the idea of writing what amounts to ten linked novellas about Magnus that would add up to the Bane Chronicles.
I am actually still waiting on some details — the first installment is likely to be out closer to April than February, just because of the amount of time it takes in production to get it ready for Amazon, and the amount of time to create a cover, etc. After that they should come out roughly every month online until there have been ten. At some point after that, for those who do not like reading things online, they will be bound up into a book."

Sarah Rees Brennan also spoke on the matter on her Tumblr:

"More about the Bane Chronicles above for people’s delectations.
We are SORRY for the delay! We love you! We want to give you monkeys! (Note: that may just be me on the monkey thing.) There’s going to be more news soon! Won’t the Magnus cover be awesome? So, so awesome. I can’t wait to see it. Sparklacious! (Note: I do not speak for Simon & Schuster. They are not legally obliged to make things sparklacious just because I audaciously suggest it.
… But they should. ;) )"

You can see everything that Cassandra Clare talked about in her Tumblr post below:

The Bane Chronicles

"Hey Cassie! I wanna start with: “I’m a huge, /huge/ fan of your work” and a “Iloveyou”. Now that I got that out of the way, I shall proceed to freak out. The Bane Chronicles are real?! You will really write that? Can you be any more awesome? Really, by far one of my favorite modern writers. Magnus is by far one of my favorite characters and you killed my heart a little when Malec stopped being cannon. Okay… I think I’m done fangirling… for now. — twotwentyonefandomstreet
Yes, the Bane Chronicles are real! Like Tinkerbell, but more so, because Tinkerbell does not have a publishing contract.
Basically the Bane Chronicles were born out of me being in France with Maureen Johnson and Sarah Rees Brennan and me mentioning that people often asked for a novel about Magnus, but that I didn’t feel like the novel form really fit Magnus, though I’d like to do a series of linked short stories but I didn’t have time.
Maureen and Sarah had both written essays for Shadowhunters and Downworlders, so their grasp on all things Shadowhunter and Magnus related was particularly keen at the moment. It turned out they had many brilliant ideas for stories about Magnus, including What Happened in Peru, and also What Happened When Magnus Met Will’s Father, and What Happened When Magnus Met Camille, and What Happened When Magnus Was in A Hot Air Balloon and How Magnus Figured Out What To Get Alec for His Birthday.
So basically we got the idea of writing what amounts to ten linked novellas about Magnus that would add up to the Bane Chronicles.
I am actually still waiting on some details — the first installment is likely to be out closer to April than February, just because of the amount of time it takes in production to get it ready for Amazon, and the amount of time to create a cover, etc. After that they should come out roughly every month online until there have been ten. At some point after that, for those who do not like reading things online, they will be bound up into a book.
Each installment will be priced at something reasonable for what is basically a novella (somewhere between 1 and 3 dollars I’d guess) and the cover will be like a regular Mortal Instruments book, featuring Magnus, and for the online publication it will be broken up into ten sections, which as each installment is released will come together to form one big picture.
This kind of project is something of an experiment, as in — not really done much in publishing these days but we thought it would be a fun opportunity to collaborate, to write about a character we all like, and experiment with serial fiction, as in, a story in installments. I feel like there’s a special pleasure to reading a story in installments that is like watching a TV show with episodes in installments. Dickens used to write in installments because his stories were serialized in magazines (Ditto Conan Doyle); we don’t really have that any more, but we do have the internet and online publishing.
That’s all I know about the Bane Chronicles right now but I will of course update as I learn more.

The Bane Chronicles snippet:

And now, some words from The Bane Chronicles (these entirely Sarah’s genius) :
You could not tell a potential customer, expecting a learned and ancient magician, that you were not even fully grown. Magnus had started lying about his age young, and never dropped the habit.
It did get a little embarrassing sometimes when he forgot what lie he’d told to who. Someone had once asked him what Julius Caesar was like, and Magnus had stared for much too long and said ‘… Not tall.’ ’"

Nothing is set in stone yet so stay tuned to find out the exact date to when The Bane Chronicles will come out.

New revealing 'Clockwork Princess' snippet!

We wee supposed to get a special announcement today from Cassie, but since we won't get that until next week, she has given us a Clockwork Princess snippet!

“You do not want to help us,” Will said to Magnus. “You do not want to position yourself as an enemy of Mortmain’s.”
“Well, can you blame him?” Woolsey rose in a whirl of yellow silk. “What could you possibly have to offer that would make the risk worth it to him?”
“I will give you anything,” said Tessa in a low voice that Will felt in his bones. “Anything at all, if you can help us help Jem.”
Magnus gripped a handful of his black hair. “God, the two of you. I can make inquiries. Track down some of the more unusual shipping routes. Old Molly —”
“I’ve been to her,” Will said. “Something’s frightened her so badly she won’t even crawl out of her grave.”
Woolsey snorted. “And that doesn’t tell you anything, little Shadowhunter? Is it really worth all this, just to stretch your friend’s life out another few months, another year? He will die anyway. And the sooner he dies, the sooner you can have his fiancĂ©e, the one you’re in love with.” He cut his amused gaze toward Tessa. “Really you ought to be counting down the days till he expires with great eagerness.”

Poor Will. Poor Jem. Poor Tessa. Jem is dying guys and it hurts so bad. Don't mind me as I cry in a corner.
Clockwork Princess will be in stores on March 19, 2013.

New unidentified snippet!!

Today Cassie released a new unidentified snippet.

Belatedly, she realized something else. “Do you … have anything?”
He didn’t seem to have recovered from her last comment. “But do you mean — wait, do I have what?”
She slitted her eyes at him. “Something important.”
“Like what? The phone number for the White House?” A moment later, under her withering glare, realization dawned. “Oh.” His was the expression of someone who has run out of gas in the middle of the desert, miles from help. “I … “

Who do you think it is that is having the coversation? Which book do you think it's from?

Cassandra Clare gave us a brand new "Clockwork Princess" snippet.

"Gabriel would not soon forget the look that spread over the man’s face at that: there was       satisfaction in it, but there was little surprise. It was clear he had expected nothing else, and nothing better, from the Lightwood boys."

What do you think is going on with Gideon and Gabriel?

“Though Will was saying earlier,” Tessa added, “that heroes all come to bad ends, and he could not imagine why anyone would want to be one, anyway.”
“Ah.” Jem’s hand squeezed hers briefly, and then let it go. “Well, Will is looking at it from the hero’s viewpoint, isn’t he? But as for the rest of us, it’s an easy answer.”
“Is it?”
“Of course.” His voice was almost a whisper now. “Heroes endure because we need them. Not for their own sakes. If Will …”

What does this mean for our hero Will? What will become of Jem. We should get a new snippet on Wednesday, August 8th as Jem takes on Will in The Final Four.

"You vote if you feel like it, hopefully ‘cause you love them, but don’t feel obligated," Cassie said.

Will snippet from Clockwork Princess:
Tessa leaned forward and caught at his hand, pressing it between her own. The touch was like white fire through his veins: he could not feel her skin, only the cloth of the gloves, and yet it did not matter. How you have kindled me, heap of ashes that I am, into fire. He had wondered once why love was always phrased in terms of burning: the conflagration in his own veins, now, gave the answer. “You are good, Will,” she said. “There is no one better placed than I am to be able to say with perfect confidence how good you really are.”
