SHADOWHUNTER WRAP-UP: 'City of Heavenly Fire' snippet, TLH news, and more

There's lots of news in the Shadowhunter fandom and here's a rundown of the latest!

Cassandra Clare shared a very special Valentine with fans: a brand new snippet from City of Heavenly Fire. This snippet features Julian Blackthorn, one of the Los Angeles Institute characters from the highly anticipated series The Dark Artifices.

Take a look:

“Julian,” said Jia, in the same gentle voice, “would you do something for us? Would you take up the Mortal Sword?”
Clary sat up straight. She had held the Mortal Sword: she had felt the weight of it. The cold, like hooks in your skin, dragging the truth out of you. You couldn’t lie holding the Mortal Sword, but the truth, even a truth you wanted to tell, was agony.
“They can’t,” she whispered. “He’s just a kid —“
“He’s the oldest of the kids who escaped the Institute,” Jace said under his breath. “They don’t have a choice.”
Julian nodded, his thin shoulders straight. “I’ll take it.”
Robert Lightwood passed behind the podium then and went to the table. He took up the sword and returned to stand in front of Julian. The contrast between them was almost funny: the big, barrel-chested man and the lanky, wild-haired boy.
Julian reached a hand up and took the sword. As his hand closed around the hilt, he shuddered, a ripple of pain that was quickly forced down. Emma, behind him, started forward, and Clary caught a glimpse of the look on her face — pure fury — before Helen caught at her and pulled her back.
The book is roughly 733 pages, according to Cassie. "There’s no difference between the Walmart edition and any other edition in terms of the story, so you shouldn’t worry about whatever page number they have listed. It’s all the same book."

With all that said, Cassie also revealed that TESSA AND JEM will make an appearance in the book!

Signed copies of COHF at Barnes & Noble

There 2,000 first edition signed copies of City of Heavenly Fire for sale at Barnes & Noble, according to Cassie.
I signed about 2,000 first editions of City of Heavenly Fire for Barnes and Noble (not that the COHF books have been printed yet, but I signed the first pages and they’ll be bound in. So you’ll be able to order them from B&N soon. I’ll put up the link when I have it. Every one will also be stamped with a rune stamp, and some of them — totally randomly — have my sketch of Church in them. That’s sort of a lottery, whether you end up with one of those, though. And you can always get signed books of mine from Books of Wonder.
There will be extras in both the first editions and regular prints, but with a little bit more for fans to rave about! Cassie says:
Well, all the first editions of City of Heavenly Fire have a portrait on the inside of Jace, Simon, Maia, Alec and Isabelle done by Cliff Nielson, who does all my covers. Only the hardcover first editions sold by Simon and Schuster in the US and Canada will have that portrait on the inside cover. All the books will also come with a note from one of the characters in the end that is handwritten and printed, and leads into the Dark Artifices series. That’s every book, not just the first editions. As to how to buy first editions — basically first editions are all the copies in a publisher’s first print run. They last until they sell out. So the earlier you order a book the more likely you are to get one.

Bane Chronicles book set for print in November

Cassie revealed that the first edition of The Bane Chronicles will hit stands in November 2014. Cassie says:
Anticipatory and terrified is exactly how you should be! :) Yep, the Bane Chronicles will be released in print — the current publication date for the print edition of the Bane Chronicles is November 11 of this year.
The newest story in the series, The Course of True Love (and First Dates), comes out this Tuesday.

Name of 'TLH' project to be released

On February 25…
You’ll be finding out what TLH stands for.

HAPPY BELATED VALENTINES DAY FROM CASSANDRA JEAN!

Jamie Bamber of Battlestar Galactica to Narrate 'The Bane Chronicles: The Last Stand of the New York Institute'!

Cassandra Clare has shared on her tumblr page that Jamie Bamber from the famous television series, "Battlestar Galactica", will be narrating the final short story of The Bane Chronicles. In her post, Cassie also talked about what is she is currently working on and it has to something to do with the final book of The Mortal Instruments book series!
"As the Bane Chronicles draws to a close, I know you’re all worried. Can we really keep up our excellent track record of Hot Guys Reading You Stories? I’m happy to announce that we can.
The actor who will be reading The Last Stand of the New York Institute, the second-last Bane Chronicle, is… Jamie Bamber. You may know him from Battlestar Galactica. (Captain Apollo!) Sarah, who has a creepily encyclopaedic knowledge of Hot British Actors, loves him from the Hornblower TV series in which apparently Jamie Bamber wore a very poofy white shirt, had a lot of feelings and served in His Majesty’s navy. I don’t ask questions.
We are so excited to have Jamie Bamber onboard, and can’t wait to hear his interpretations of Magnus, Luke, Valentine, Jocelyn…and Stephen Herondale.
(I now disappear back into the depths of copyediting, as City of Heavenly Fire is in the very last stages of having its commas moved and its continuity errors corrected …which with a 200,000 word book is no small undertaking. I will emerge I hope in the New Year, and I’ll be posting some art Christmas Day — Cassandra Jean’s December calendar pages for both the boys and girls!)"
Shadowhunters if you have not purchased The Last Stand of the New York Institute when it came out on December 17, we highly recommend you do! Read the synopsis to find out why:
"In the time of the Uprising, Valentine’s Circle goes after Downworlders in New York…and the Shadowhunters of the Institute must decide whether to join him, or fight with Magnus and his kind. This is the first time Magnus sees Jocelyn, Luke, and Stephen—but not the last. It is not long before Jocelyn seeks him out…."

Jordan Gavaris of Orphan Black to Narrate Bane Chronicles Novel

Cassandra Clare has a thing for talented actors and their narrating abilities. She has just announced that 'Orphan Black' actor who plays Felix on the show will be reading the upcoming installment in the Bane Chronicles short What to Buy the Shadowhunter Who Has Everything. If you're an Orphan Black fan—like I am—this is beyond awesome. He will lend his voice to one of the funniest books in the series.

Cassandra Clare shared her excitement earlier by saying this in a Tumblr post,

"Hello! Cute boy got your attention? I am zipping by in the middle of editing to announce that Jordan Gavaris of Orphan Black will be reading the next of the Bane Chronicles. If you haven’t seen Orphan Black, Jordan’s character Felix is one of the most fantastic things about an already fantastic show with amazing performances, and we’re so happy to have Jordan reading what might be the funniest of the Bane Chronicles installments: What to Buy the Shadowhunter Who Has Everything. In which Magnus angsts, calls Ragnor, and seeks advice from a tentacled demon about his love life.

Look out for an interview where I chat with Jordan about reading the Bane Chronicles and also angle for Orphan Black spoilers. (If you aren’t watching it, you should be! Sarah RB turned me onto it and I am grateful enough to forgive her for the stunt she pulled in Italy with the bat.)

Welcome, Jordan. :)"

Are you an excited Orphan Black/Bane Chronicles fan? Comment below if you are!

New Bane Chronicles snippet features Elyaas the demon

Cassie Clare took to Tumblr to share a brand new snippet from The Bane Chronicles: What to Buy the Shadowhunter Who has Everything, which features a fun interaction with the blue tentacled demon Elyaas, who made an appearance in The Infernal Devices. Read ahead...

Bane Chronicles snippet
“How have you been keeping? You know, since the last time you summoned me,” said Elyaas, the demon.“What?” Magnus asked.“You don’t remember me?” said the tentacle demon.“I summon a lot of demons,” Magnus said weakly. There was a long pause. Magnus stared into the bottom of his coffee cup and desperately willed more coffee to appear. This was something a lot of mundanes did too, but Magnus had one up on those suckers. His mug did slowly fill again, until it was brimming with rich dark liquid. He sipped and looked at Elyaas, who was shifting uncomfortably from tentacle to tentacle.“Well,” said Elyaas. “This is awkward.”“It’s nothing personal,” said Magnus.“Maybe if I jogged your memory,” Elyaas suggested helpfully. “You summoned me when you were searching for a demon who cursed a Shadowhunter? Bill Herondale?”“Will Herondale,” said Magnus.Elyaas snapped his tentacles as if they were fingers. “I knew it was something like that.”“You know,” Magnus said, enlightened, “I think I do remember. I’m sorry about that. I realized right away that you weren’t the demon I was looking for. You looked kind of blue in one of the drawings, but obviously you are not blue, and I was wasting your time. You were pretty understanding about it.”“Think nothing of it.” Elyaas waved a tentacle. “These things happen. And I can look blue. You know, in the right light.”“Lighting’s important, it’s true,” said Magnus.“So whatever happened with Bill Herondale and that curse a blue demon put on him?” The cecaelia demon’s interest seemed genuine.“Will Herondale,” Magnus said again. “It’s actually rather a long story.”“You know, sometimes we demons pretend we’re cursing people and we don’t really do it,” said Elyaas chattily. “Like, just for kicks? It’s kind of a thing with us. Did you know that?”“You could have mentioned it a century or two ago,” Magnus observed frostily.Elyaas shook his head, smiling a slime-bedecked smile. “The old pretend-to-curse. It’s a classic. Very funny.” He appeared to notice Magnus’s unimpressed expression for the first time. “Not from your perspective, of course.”“It wasn’t funny for Bill Herondale!” said Magnus. “Oh, damn it. Now you’ve got me doing it.”— from What to Buy the Shadowhunter Who Has Everything*We just got news on an awesome audio narrator for this one - I think you guys will be pleased!

George Blagden, narrator of The Bane Chronicles: The Runaway Queen

George Blagden,
narrator of The Bane Chronicles: The Runaway Queen

Sarah Rees Brennan shared her thoughts on Tumblr about the new narrator for the upcoming second instalment in The Bane Chronicles: The Runaway Queen, George Blagden.

She said, "So, George Blagden is going to be narrating Maureen and Cassie’s wonderful The Runaway Queen!

Just before I left Ireland, I’d seen Les Miserables, in which he played Grantaire, the cynical drunk member of the revolution. He was a favourite of mine from the book (I’m a nerd ;)) and I said unto myself ‘Hey, dude who plays him is great.’

Look, I’m from Ireland, it’s cultural: we love drunks."

A message from Cassie:

Jesse Williams talks narrating 'THE BANE CHRONICLES' audiobook!

Jesse Williams was chosen to narrate the first installments of The Bane Chronicles, What Really Happened in Peru. Hollywood Crush was able to sit down with him and talk about his experience narrating, trying something new and more. He also talks what he loves about our favorite warlock, Magnus Bane.

Check out what he had to say in the video below:

And in addition to praising the great writing in "The Bane Chronicles," Jesse also said that he got a real kick out of the book's main man: Magnus Bane, the cavalier warlock who cameos in every book from Cassanda Clare's Shadowhunter series. (Hint: For the serious actor, it's the character's "devil-may-care attitude" that won him over.) Want to hear all Jesse's thoughts on his first outing in the audiobook world? You know what to do!
