Music Monday #1 - "Echo" by Foxes

I've searched for a song and a singer that would be the voice for The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones soundtrack. It's been hard to find a female lead that matches the emotions I feel when I read the first book from Cassandra Clare.

When I look back to book-to-film adaptations such as Twilight and The Hunger Games, there have been females leading the charge on the charts. First, it was Hayley Williams with her band Paramore that brought "Decode" to the limelight of pop music as the hit single for the Twilight soundtrack. The song was certified Platinum in the U.S on February 16, 2010, selling over 1,000,000 copies It was also nominated for a Grammy Award in 2010 for Best Song Written for a Movie. The Twilight soundtrack debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200, selling 165,000 copies in its first week. Chop Shop Records went on to have massive success with the New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn: Part 1 soundtracks.

 More recently, country songstress Taylor Swift helped The Hunger Games soundtrack debut at number 1 on the Billboard 200 with 175,000 copies sold on its first week. It sold 100K digital copies the next week, making it the highest one-week total for a theatrically released movie soundtrack in digital history. It has been certified as Gold by the RIAA since April 27, 2012.

So what songstress could be the next to rocket a soundtrack to chart success? There are so many options, but I tend to go for newer artists that have the chops to really dig deep and express a theme of a film appropriately. Here's where 22-year-old sexy British siren Louisa Rose Allen comes in. She is known in the music world as Foxes.

Sometimes the most rewarding discoveries are the ones that take you completely by surprise. Foxes is one of those discoveries. Arriving unheralded with her Neon Gold Records’ debut ‘Youth’ late last year, it wasn’t long before the song’s resplendent synths, industrial percussion and by-turns-searing-and-soaring vocal were the talk of the town.

Louisa followed her big sister to London the day she turned 18. She tried her hand at studying music but dropped out when she realised it wasn’t the studying part that she enjoyed. With ‘Youth’ (and its mournful b-side ‘Home’, and resulting remixes) having so far garnered over a million combined Soundcloud and YouTube plays, and 1,250 Hypemachine ‘likes’ between them, it’s unlikely she’ll be heading back to class anytime soon.

Now she returns with its eagerly awaited follow up, the Warrior EP, led by the dual-pronged attack of lead songs ‘Warrior’ and ‘White Coats’. Foxes will release the Warrior EP on 1st July via Neon Gold Records on 7-inch vinyl and digital EP. She is currently touring with Marina and the Diamonds.
