Movie Monday #22: Alec and Magnus' relationship in City of Bones

Amber, TMI Institute: We all know how important it was to Cassie to have the relationship between Magnus and Alec preserved for the big screen. It was one of those sticking points she held her ground with and fortunately the studio was absolutely fine with the relationship being a part of the storyline. In the books we only see the first inkling of a spark between Malec in City of Bones. Alec’s sexual preference is something he keeps secret, and honestly it’s something I think he is scared to admit to himself. Magnus is very open about his orientation and flirts a bit with Alec.
I’m not sure yet just how far along they will progress a relationship between Alec and Magnus for the first movie. I’d assume it will progess throughout the franchise. Since an important plot in the film is Alec’s jealousy of the blossoming relationship between Jace and Clary, I’m thinking that most of the movie will be more focused on Alec defining his feelings for Jace. However, I am very interested to see if there will be a sweet Malec moment by the end of the movie. I think everyone will fall in love with this couple and will crave more Malec for City of Ashes.

Movie Monday #17: Garroway Books

This week I let Shannon take the helm to talk in more depth about the scene(s) that will be at Luke's bookstore. Here's what she had to say:


I think the scenes shot at Luke's store will be a big turning point in the movie. Clary has just been introduced to the Shadowhunter world and learned that her mother was more involved than she ever expected and Jace is about to see the two men that he thinks murdered his father. I think this scene will show a transition in character development and is when the adventure will truly begin.

So in City of Bones Clary has just ventured through the portal, her first portal ride, as she is still a complete novice to the ins and outs of the Shadowhunter world, and Jace has just gone in after her knowing the dangers of travelling through an unidentified portal. They arrive at Luke's and all seems harmless enough until they enter the store and walk through into Luke's home. They see manacles on the wall and Jace discovers various weapons which Clary always assumed were Luke's collectables. The store (though the name is not mentioned in the book, is indeed called 'Garroway Books and Curios') It wouldn't be out of the ordinary for Luke to have these kinds of objects in his possession. 

 

However, when Simon (who has been hiding out in Luke's bushes), Clary and Jace hear voices, they hide behind a room divider and watch as a banged up Luke arrives with two mysterious men in robes who begin to question him about Jocelyn and the child. This a big moment for Clary, she watches as Luke packed up his things and a great amount of weapons, she listens to him plead his innocence to these two men. She feels betrayed. For Jace it's an even bigger moment: he sees the two men he believes to have killed his father right before his eyes. 

What a traumatic experience! Tough-as-nails-Jace reverts back to that little boy who lost his father at a young age, left parentless in the world. Clary witnesses the only man she's ever thought of as a father figure deny her. 

There are no small, insignificant scenes in City of Bones and just the same, after being on set, I realize that there are no small, insignificant scenes in City of Bones the movie either. When reading the book this scenes may seem like a pass over section, a part that just bridges the next "big" event but in itself, this small scenes packs a hell of a lot of impact into the storyline. The crew spent 2 days building Luke's store on set and the studio spent an entire week filming there! That tells me that this scene is HUGE! I strongly believe they've built the scene up a bit more, maybe they've added in some sort of foreshadowing, other insight from one of the characters' POV. They filmed during the day and they filmed in the middle of the night so clearly there's more than one thing going on there or maybe it's a multitude of scenes! A inflated fall pad for stunts hung from a crane just below the roof of the building—someone's jumping off the roof! There was an old model fire truck on standby, whether it was part of the scene or was actually there for safety reasons, that's yet to be determined but either way the efforts put into this scene are ample example of magnitude of this part of the story both in the book and in the film. I cannot stress enough what a fabulous job I think the studio is doing in adapting this book into film. They are truly doing City of Bones justice and when I sit in that theatre and watch the ending credits roll I will applaud and give a standing ovation.

Movie Monday #16: 2006 vs. Present

This week we talk about the differences in setting the movie in 2006 vs present day. Here's my take on this topic:

Amber, TMI Institute: When reading City of Bones the first time, which was back in 2008 if I remember correctly, I was not really aware that the Shadowhunters were living in 2006. When I thought about this post, I decided to put my theory to the test, so I asked my 11-year-old daughter who just read CoB if she knew what year the book was set. She also presumed it was present day. I think the pop culture references in the book are still very recognizable to today’s movie goers, and that the book is written in a style where time is not a major factor. I don’t think putting the movie in the year 2012 or 2013 will make a big deal in the story line. I believe they will make the movie time frame present day.

WEEK 14: THE CIRCLE FLASHBACKS
Here's my thoughts on possible flashback scenes of the circle.

Amber, TMI Institute: I would personally love to see flashbacks to the Circle. I know there are things that will be chopped for time, but I could see them showing flashes of a young, charismatic Valentine with Jocelyn by his side and Luke standing in the background looking worried while Valentine slowly tries to warp them into believing that his ultimate twisted goal is the correct one. I don’t know if they would hire different actors for this or if they would just make the actors look as young as possible. I just really hope this happens!

Movie Monday #13: Brother Jeremiah

We are exactly ONE WEEK away from the beginning of filming of the much anticipated film. This week we hit the 13th week of our feature (on August 13th by the way), and we talk about Brother Jeremiah. Here's my take on the Silent Brother.
There's no imagery quite so haunting in 'City of Bones' as the first glimpse Clary has of Brother Jeremiah. "The archivist's head was bald, smooth and white as an egg, darkly indented where his eyes had once been. They were gone now. His lips were crisscrossed with a pattern of dark lines that resembled surgical stitches." A frightening sight, don't you agree? With the casting of the super talented (and super tall) Stephen R. Hart and the makeup/prosthetics magic from 3B Artistry and PaulJonesFX, I'm confident that the Brother Jeremiah we will see in the movie will be just as visually unforgettable as he is in the narrative.

Movie Monday 12: Madame Dorothea

This week we take a look at a scene from the chapter "The Five Dimensional Door".
Amber, TMI Institute: With the casting of CCH Pounder as Madame Dorothea, I went back and re-read The Five Dimensional Door, to try to picture the iconic actress in this scene. There are many things we learn in this moment when Jace and Clary visit Madame Dorothea’s apartment. The majority of the chapter focuses on a discussion of magic, legends and tea leaves. Even though Madame Dorothea comes across a bit like Miss Cleo in the beginning, it quickly becomes clear that she is hiding precious info about Clary and her mom. I really look forward to seeing the moment of clarity when Jace realizes that Dorothea is harboring a five-dimensional door and the moment Clary breaks away just enough to jump through.

Movie Monday 11: Java Jones

Here is my thoughts on the Java Jones scene from Chapter 3: Shadowhunter:

WEEK 11: JAVA JONES
The "Shadowhunter" chapter sheds more light on the mysterious world of nephilim and downworlders, mostly happening at (or outside) the coffee house Java Jones. I feel this scene must be in the movie for a number of reasons.

The backdrop of this part of the book takes place as Simon and Clary go to see Eric do a hideous poetry session at Java Jones. I'm dying to see Simon (Robert Sheehan) looking antsy as he tries to tell Clary (Lily Collins) how much he wants her to be his girlfriend and how oblivious Clary is to this fact. I can't wait for that moment when she notices Jace (Jamie Campbell Bower) sitting there in the shop, hidden from everyone but her, and how she abruptly runs out after him when he goes outside.

The interaction between them outside Java Jones is just as necessary. Jace tries to find out what she is. Clary is confused and annoyed at his inherent babbling about Shadowhunters but interested enough to stay and talk. "Declarations of love amuse me, especially when unrequited" is one of my favorite lines by Jace. He realizes how much Simon, the most mundane of mundanes, likes Clary even though she clearly doesn't feel the same. This is just another revelation he is trying to share with Clary. It's a way to open her eyes to all the truths she seems to miss in her life.

I'm equally just as excited to see when Clary opens her mind up enough to see Jace's runes, thus confirming his suspicions about her. This leads to an unexpected set of calls from her mom (Jocelyn is portrayed by Lena Headey), where Clary realizes she is in danger. Jace tries to help, but Clary lashes out at him, scraping her nails along his face. She runs off into the night to save her mom. This scene will be a great transition to the attack on Clary by the Ravener demon.

This week we discuss the aftermath of the Midnight Flower scene. Here's my thoughts!

Week 10: SIMON CATCHES CLARY & JACE KISSING

There are so many things I love about the chapter “Midnight Flower”. The moment when Jace let’s go of his control and kisses Clary for the first time is flawless, but the scene that steals it all is the dialogue between Jace, Clary and Simon when Simon walks out of her bedroom to see them together.

This was the first time I visualized our three actors, Jamie Campbell Bower (Jace), Lily Collins (Clary) and Robert Sheehan (Simon) in this scene. Simon, poor Simon. Clary totally forgot about him. Jace says “Just kissing? How swiftly you dismiss our love” after Clary breaks it to Simon that she and Jace kissed. Poor Simon feels defeated, losing the only girl that he never truly had…at least not in that sense. Jace continues, “Go on. Go after him. pat his head and tell him he’s still your super special little guy.” Jace clearly is angry but only spews sarcasm. Simon is clearly just as angry. Two boys in love with the same girl, and Clary is stuck in the middle trying to figure out what she feels.

If you look at the scene and the boys side by side, you can clearly see why Simon has every right to be upset. He has been in love with Clary for 10 years, being there for her through everything. Jace, although the new guy, is clearly a threat, and has taken Clary’s attention. Clary isn’t crazy about Simon swooning over Izzy, either, and I am really looking forward to seeing Lily look angry and confused by what Clary thinks is Simon’s irrational reaction. After seeing Robert Sheehan in Misfits and Killing Bono, I’m completely confident that he can bring a passionate authenticity to this scene and make us all want him as a boyfriend!

We are even closer, just under a month, until the cast starts filming the movie!

This week, we discuss Pangborn and Blackwell in the scene with Luke. Here's my take on it.

“All the myths are true,” said Pangborn, and Clary felt a small shiver go up her spine. “Or have you forgotten that?” There are a few things that the interaction between Luke and Valentine’s henchmen, Pangborn and Blackwell, do in the plot. It gives Clary, Jace and Simon the key to know who sent the Ravener demon after her mom. It also shows history between Luke and the Shadowhunter world. Finally, it provides proof that although Luke seems uncaring, he is ultimately trying to protect Clary from Valentine.
I’m thrilled that seasoned actors Kevin Durand and Robert Maillet are playing Pangborn and Blackwell. They can deliver menacing performances that will leave TMI with chills of fear and anticipation for what’s to come next.

This week we take a look at the popular quotes we hope to see in the film. Here's my thoughts on this:
Although I’d love to hear and see every quote from the City of Bones book on the big screen, the screenplay writers, I. Marlene King and Jessica Postigo, have surely narrowed the dialogue to include great quotes from the book as well as new lines that will help to move the plot of the movie along well. One of the quotes I would love to see have been mentioned in our post about pop culture references, and is a conversation between Jace and Clary:

“Don’t touch any of my weapons without my permission.”
“Well, there goes my plan for selling them all on eBay,” Clary muttered.
“Selling them on what?”
Clary smiled blandly at him. “A mythical place of great magical power.”

There are so many one-liners by Jace that I’d love to see included in the film:

“Declarations of love amuse me. Especially when unrequited.”

“The meek may inherit the earth, but at the moment it belongs to the conceited. Like me.”

“Just coffee. Black – like my soul.”

Of course, there is plenty of dialogue between Simon and Clary that I enjoy. Here’s a couple I really want to see in the movie:

“Was it weird hearing from Jace?” asked Simon, his voice carefully neutral. “I mean, since you found out…”
His voice trailed off.
Yes?”said Clary, her voice sharply edged. “Since I found out what? That he’s a killer transvestite who molests cats?”
“No wonder that cat of his hates everyone.”
Oh, shut up, Simon,” Clary said crossly.”

OR one of my fave lines from early in the book:

“Meanwhile,” Simon added, “I wanted to tell you that lately I‘ve been cross-dressing. Also, I‘m sleeping with your mom. I thought you should know."

This week we take a look at the pop culture references from the book. From eBay to X-Men, there are many hysterical moments in CoB that would translate great onscreen.

Here's my take on this topic:
I would love to see our shadowhunters respond cluelessly to pop culture references! It’s very clear in the books that they are trained from an early age that protecting the world from evil is their top priority. Clary and Simon were raised as mundanes, a world where kids spend their time learning the words to their fave movies, tv shows and songs. To them and to the movie goers, I think a moment like Jace not knowing what eBay is will be hysterical. This quote will become a pop culture reference, too! I hope it makes the cut!

Movie Monday #6: Isabelle discusses Alec's sexuality

I’ve banded together with other ‘Mortal Instruments’ fansites (TMI Source, Mundie Moms, TMI Examiner and TMI News en Espanol)) for a new weekly feature called Movie Monday.
Each Monday leading up to the August 23, 2013, release of ‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones,’ we will take a look at a scene, moment, detail, etc. and give our opinions on how we think it will be interpreted in the big screen adaptation.

This week we take a look at the scene before Magnus Bane's party when Clary questions Isabelle about Alec's sexuality. Cassie said when Jemima auditioned for the role of Isabelle, she said that Jemima was lovely and passionate as she said “I love my brother, I’d do anything for him, but I can’t help him with this”. With that being said, it looks like this scene will definitely be included in some way.


Here's my take on it:

I would like to see the scene with Clary asking Isabelle about Alec being gay. I think it shows a lot of depth in Izzy’s character. For the most part, Izzy is rough around the edges, even in her seven inch heels. However, Isabelle is absolutely loyal to her family and open minded enough to see that Alec is different than the stereotypical shadowhunter and loves him even more for that. It also gives Clary and Izzy a bonding moment. I look forward to this
moment!

Week 2: JOCELYN’S CALL TO CLARY

Here's my take on the scene....

Jocelyn's phone call to Clary is an important transition from Clary's conversation with Jace at Java Joe's to a more complex situation in which Clary puts herself at risk in order to help her mom from an unknown terror. I can visualize this scene being in the film. I think it will break up the tension between Jace and Clary's conversation and move the film along at a nice pace. I do, however, think that it may be a tricky scene to film because phone call scenes don't always translate well on screen unless well written. It could be that they just show Clary's reactions to the call instead of showing Jocelyn actually talking to her. This would provide a better effect when we actually see the demon attack on Clary.

Movie Monday - City of Bones “Pandemonium” scene

With filming starting just a little more than two months away, there are many things that TMI fans expect to see in City of Bones. I’ve banded together with other ‘Mortal Instruments’ fansites (Alyssa, host for Movie Monday from TMI Source, Katie from Mundie Moms, Natalie from TMI Examiner and Tita from TMI News en Espanol) for a new weekly feature called Movie Monday.


Each Monday leading up to the August 23, 2013, release of ‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones,’ we will take a look at a scene, moment, detail, etc. and give our opinions on how we think it will be interpreted in the big screen adaptation.This week we discuss the Pandemonium scene, in which Clary gets her first glimpse of Jace, Alec and Isabelle as they set out to slay a demon. Here's my take on the scene:

When I think of the Pandemonium scene, I believe it is important to play it much like it is in the book. I can see the writers/director doing it with slight alterations. My thought would be that they would start it from the perspective of the blue-haired boy, who we later find out is a demon. They could show him getting into the club by putting a glamour on the bouncer (and everyone else for that matter).


They could show pan shot of the Pandemonium club which would end on Clary and Simon already in there dancing awkwardly. To me, they would stick out from the crowd because of their normal dress and lack of piercings. I think they could have the blue haired boy walk past Clary, which grabs her attention. She might notice that his eyes are too green, that his blade is real, etc. It could be like she believes she is hallucinating.


About that time, they could show the kid passing out the herbal ecstasy. It would give the impression that maybe Clary was hallucinating, which would trick the audience. That would give the director time to show the conversation with Simon and Clary about how she thinks the blue-haired boy is cute and how she continues to follow what he is doing throughout the scene. Simon could ramble in the background while they show Clary staring after him. The blue-haired boy would then be shown passing by Clary on his way to Isabelle, who lures him into the storage room.
From there, I can see the scene playing out as it is in the book because we will want that initial meeting between Jace and Clary to be authentic.
