Runes in June Contest!

The release of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones movie is quickly approaching! The Mortal Institute and Better in Black have come up with a contest for you amazing shadowhunters. Runes in June consists of writing a short poem about two runes we will be posting each week on Instagram and Facebook. You can include both runes or just use one of them in your poem. For example if we posted the angelic and strength runes you would write about one or both. Here is a sample of a poem for the angelic rune: 

Creeping, turning,
Twisting, winding
Elegantly spread
Written on a milky surface
Darkness demons dread
Singing out its silent message
Protection on the heart
Oldest of the runes
Angelic from the start

How do you enter? Well on instagram all you have to do is post a pic of your poem and use the hashtag #RunesinJune and tag us by putting our account @themortalinstitute. If you are entering on Facebook you would put your poem in the comment section on Better in Black's FB status for the two runes we post for you guys to write your poem about.

Who can enter? This contest is international so anyone can enter.

What can you win? We have 8 rune decals to giveaway; four rune decals will be given to instagram entries and four runes decals will be given to Facebook entries. You can see the photo above shows the prize which are the rune decals.

How do you win? The Mortal Institute team will choose 1 winner each week of June randomly from the instagram entries. Better in Black team will also choose 1 winner randomly each week from the Facebook entries. Thus, as you can see we will give you a week to write the poem and we won't be judging your poem, you will be randomly selected as the winner. So good luck!

New 'City of Heavenly Fire' Snippet!

The New York Times Best selling author, Cassandra Clare just released another City of Heavenly Fire snippet via her tumblr account. Here it is:

His eyes shone when he looked at her, green as spring grass.He has always had green eyes, said the voice in her head. People often marvel at how much alike you are, he and your mother and yourself. His name is Jonathan and he is your brother; he has always protected you.Somewhere in the back of Clary’s mind she saw black eyes and whip marks, but she didn’t know why. He’s your brother. He’s your brother, and he’s always taken care of you.

The final novel of The Mortal Instruments will come out in March 2014! This will be a long and excruciating wait until we all find out the fates of these characters we have grown to love.

Cassie answers a very debated question on Tumblr

Valentine's hair color and style.  Such a debated topic.

“I’m not sure if anyone’s asked, probably has, but do you know why they didnt choose to make Valentine’s hair fair/almost white I’m the adaptation? I imagine it would’ve been hard to find someone who could match that or pull it off, but it just ties in to the stories so much to me that I was shocked when I saw dark hair. I’m afraid it might make Johnathon/Sebastian less interesting in the (hopeful) movies to come.

I’ve no idea, really, no more than I know the answer to the lot of questions about Jamie’s eye color or Lily’s hair color or Isabelle’s height or Alec’s sleeves — I am absolutely not involved in these films on such a micro level that I know about wardrobe decisions, and therefore I didn’t ask about them, since annoying everyone about micro issues is a good way to make sure you get left out of decisions made about macro ones. I think it would have been a mistake to pick the actor for Valentine based on their hair color. On the other hand, I am not going to pretend I don’t know Valentine doesn’t look the way he’s described in the books, clothing and hair-wise. :) I don’t know if hair dying wasn’t possible, in the way wearing colored contacts is often not possible for actors (people tend to talk about it like it’s a simple thing to just pop them in and actors are terrible lazy people if they don’t do it, but they irritate a lot of actors’ eyes and limit their peripheral vision which can be problematic for action scene.) In the end, in 99% of cases if your book is being adapted into a film, you have to let it go and accept that what you’re going to see onscreen is an interpretation of your books. Film is a visual medium that provides single definitive pictures while books rely on reader imagination to fill in those pictures and allows for variance. Changes that don’t seem to have bothered people: Harry doesn’t have green eyes in the HP films, nor does Hermione have buck teeth; Legolas is blond, not dark-haired as in canon, and Frodo is nineteen, not fifty-something as in the books, in the LOTR films. Some changes/alterations work (casting Frodo so young works to make him a visual picture of ruined innocence as the Ring destroys him and his delicate youthfulness crumbles into wreckage) and some don’t. There’s no way to know until you see the film. As for Jonathan/Sebastian, I think as long as we know in the first film that Jonathan Morgenstern/Jace/Clary’s brother was/is blond, I am not sure why his dad’s hair color makes a difference to his character otherwise? I wouldn’t want to lose the dyed hair/disguise from City of Glass but that doesn’t require anything particular from Valentine.

Cassandra Clare answers TID & TMI questions

Recently Cassandra Clare took to tumblr to answer some fan questions regarding Clockwork Princess and even City of Heavenly Fire.

If you still need to get caught up on TID, be warned, the answers are slightly spoilery.

Here's an example of one of the questions:

“Hello Cassie! c: Sorry if you get asked this a lot, but I was just wondering when Tessa, Jem and Will’s birthdays are? Because in the first chapter of Clockwork Princess (which is AMAZING! I’m so excited to read the whole book :D), Tessa says that she and Jem are young at seventeen and eighteen, so does this mean they have both had their birthdays between Clockwork Prince and Princess? Thank-you! :D — carstairsed”

Well, what it actually says is that 1) The marriage is in December 2) Tessa and Jem will be seventeen and eighteen when they get married so 3) If they are seventeen and sixteen in April of 1878, when the books start, they have their birthdays sometime between April and December.
