Mortal Instruments Fan of the Month: November

Introducing:  Hayley Hemming
Month of: NOVEMBER

Mini Showcase:

Hayley was originally going to draw something, but for the sake of time she created a few Mortal Instruments collages:

Hayley dressed up as a Shadowhunter:

Heart by Heart is a song by Demi Lovato that is in soundtrack for The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. "This song describes Jace and Clary perfectly and I cannot stop listening to it. The lyrics and tune are haunting and it takes you straight into the heart of City of Bones." - Hayley Hemming.

When your soul finds the soul it was waiting for
When someone walks into your heart through an open door
When your hand finds the hand it was meant to hold
Don't let go
Someone comes into your world
Suddenly your world has changed forever

No there's no one else's eyes
That could see into me
No one else's arms can lift
Lift me up so high
Your love lifts me out of time
And you know my heart by heart

When you're one with the one you were meant to be find
Everything falls in place, all the stars align
When you're touched by the cloud that has touched your soul
Don't let go
Someone comes into your life
It's like they've been in your life forever

No there's no one else's eyes
That could see into me
No one else's arms can lift
Lift me up so high
Your love lifts me out of time
And you know my heart by heart

So now we've found our way to find each other
So now I found my way, to you

No there's no one else's eyes
That could see into me

No there's no one else's eyes
That could see into me
No one else's arms can lift
Lift me up so high
Your love lifts me out of time
And you know my heart by heart

And you know my heart by heart

And you know my heart by heart

And you know my heart by heart

Fan of the Month Fun Facts:

Name: Hayley Hemming

Age: 23

Where you're from: Droitwich Spa, England

Favorite book:  My favorite book of the series has to be City of Glass :) for totally obvious reasons. Its got action, romance and the ending... well... PERFECT!

Favorite character and why: I love them all but after thinking I'd have to say Jace. He's currently one of the best shadowhunters around and I like how his past was shrouded in mystery. I love his cocky attitude, saracastic ways and the way he acts to Clary is just hot haha. He loves her and because of it she gets put on this pedastool even though she can totally handle herself. I love how Jace's attitude was "To love is to destroy" but yet when he meets Clary his whole personality changes. He's the guy you have to love. Even though Valentine was bad towards him Jace still loves him and it goes to show what a better person he is. And of course he's a Herondale :) And we all know how much I LOVE WILL HERONDALE :)

Favorite quote: “Do you remember back at the hotel when you promised that if we lived, you’d get dressed up in a nurse’s outfit and give me a sponge bath?" asked Jace.
"It was Simon who promised you the sponge bath."
"As soon as I’m back on my feet, handsome," said Simon.
"I knew we should have left you a rat.” - City of Bones

Favorite fan moment: I haven't met the cast yet :'( but thinking back to my fav fan moment.. Not only when I heard they were making City of Bones into a movie but I practically screamed and jumped for joy when I found out they were making City of Ashes :)

Cassandra Clare Talks About Parabatais, TLH, CoHF, and MORE!

Cassandra Clare took to her tumblr account to answer a few questions a fan sent her through an email. There are some great questions that fan asked and vital answers from Cassie. You can read the whole thing below:
“hi cassie! i have a couple questions that i figured I’d ask through email because its always really hectic on twitter so:- can parabatai be love interests? i thought they couldn’t but emma/julian are right? that always kinda confused me- so you’re writing the dark artifices, TLH, & are you writing another shadowhunter book aside from those as well?- are we gonna see tessa/will/ jem in cohf?”Yes, twitter has become a bit of a madhouse - I can only get on for a few minutes, and then there are so many questions I can’t follow them (usually about things I know nothing about and can’t influence, like what countries there will be movie premieres in and where the cast goes) and then I run away. I am a a wuss, I guess! But if I don’t answer you on Twitter, it’s not personal!“- can parabatai be love interests? i thought they couldn’t but emma/julian are right? that always kinda confused me”The Clave says no. You’re not supposed to be romantically involved with yourparabatai. In Clockwork Prince, one of the plot points is a past pair of parabatai, one of whom committed suicide because he’d fallen in love with his parabatai and was afraid of the secret being exposed. The Clave has their reasons for this old Law. However, like pretty much every cultural/social law decreeing that people can’t fall in love or can’t marry, plenty of people break it. It’s not like no priest has ever fallen in love with anyone. And Emma and Julian’s relationship isn’t defined yet - not even by me! We know there is probably going to be an issue of romantic interest, but they are not a couple at the beginning of the books. They might never be a couple. We will see.- so you’re writing the dark artifices, TLH, & are you writing another shadowhunter book aside from those as well?My plan at the moment is to do five Shadowhunter series, total. I don’t know if I’ll do any series in the Shadowhunter world beyond that. I don’t know why five exactly — maybe because one of my major literary idols has always been Tamora Pierce and she did five series set in Tortall. :) Maybe I think I have five stories to tell in this world. Maybe I’ll get to the end and want to tell more. Maybe not — I have a stockpile of other worlds and stories in my head; I’m writing one of them by writing Magisterium now, but there are many others. There is a special sort of enjoyment in developing stories in a created world, because you can take the rules you yourself have invented, and bend them or break them. You can create connections and history — the story of Isabelle’s ruby necklace stretches back all the way to Vampires, Scones and Edmund Herondale. Then again, with a brand new world, you get to make everything up again. It’s like: brand-new baby or adorable five-year old? They’re both good.
(The five Shadowhunter series are TiD, TLH, TMI, TDA, and very far down the road, TWP. Don’t even ask about that one! It’s too far in the future! There are other Shadowhunter projects like The Bane Chronicles and the graphic novel project about the Circle, currently in planning stages and known as TST, but I’m not counting them: I’m only counting book series/trilogies written solely by me.)- are we gonna see tessa/will/ jem in cohf?”I cannot say, because those are major spoilers. All I will say is that nobody from TiD is going to be a major character in CoHF because it’s too confusing and too spoilery for the mass majority of TMI readers, who have not read TiD. (There are also plenty of TiD readers who won’t read TMI — historical can be tricky; people either won’t read it at all, or will only read it, a lot of the time.) TMI is still Clary’s story at heart. I think for TiD readers there will be a lot of interesting connections, and the fact that Tessa is still alive is not a huge secret (we saw her in CoG) but nothing in CoHF is going to give away the ending of the Clockwork series to people who haven’t read it, and that includes who Tessa ends up with. Keep that in mind, and hopefully that can help shape expectations.
Wow Cassie is a very busy woman! Five Shadowhunter series in total plus a graphic novel and another series (Magisterium) to come! Well all I can say is I'm thrilled and cannot wait to read the next series to come!

What do you guys think? Leave your comments below!

My wild 'Infernal Devices' theory: How Will could survive

I have slew of different theories, but this one just came to me while sending an email to Katie at @MundieMoms on my latest moment of literary enlightenment while rereading Clockwork Prince.

Be prepared and indulge me while I slip into my TID madness...

Cassandra Clare keeps subtly bringing up the topic of reincarnation in the books. Most people may just read it and not really give it a second thought. As an aspiring author myself, I'm learning that there is very, very little that is written in a story that does not serve a purpose. If a concept is mentioned more than once, be prepared for it to be used in a big way.

At first I was sure it was going to be Jem that got reincarnated because of his illness. While that may be (and we can all dream of a Jem appearance in Dark Artifices), the discussion between Will and Magnus in "Reparations" chapter has my mind racing. I keep thinking what if it's Will who is reincarnated? Everyone would be devastated with his death, right? BUT...what could Cassie do to make the fandom happy? How could she fix such a tragedy?

First, let's take a look at reincarnation. Here's a wiki definition that explains it rather well:

"Samsara is a Buddhist term that literally means "circle" or "wheel" and is commonly translated as "conditioned existence", "cyclic existence", "cycle of existence", etc. Within Buddhism, samsara is defined as the continual repetitive cycle of birth and death that arises from ordinary beings' grasping and fixating on a self and experiences. Specifically, samsara refers to the process of cycling through one rebirth after another within the six realms of existence, where each realm can be understood as physical realm or a psychological state characterized by a particular type of suffering. Samsara arises out of avidya (ignorance) and is characterized by dukkha (suffering, anxiety, dissatisfaction). In the Buddhist view, liberation from samsara is possible by following the Buddhist path."

In the Clockwork Prince chapter "Reparations", Will and Magnus talk about reincarnation:

Magnus: You are a Shadowhunter, you are not afraid of death.

Will: Of course I am. Everyone is afraid of death. We may be born of angels, but we have no more knowledge of what comes after death than you do.

Magnus: You don't know that there is only oblivion after death.

Will: You don't know that there isn't, do you? Jem believes we are all reborn, that life is a wheel. We die, we turn, we are reborn as we deserve to be reborn, based on our doings in this world. I will probably be reborn as a slub that someone salts.
Magnus: The Wheel of Transmigration. Well, think of it this way. You must have done something right in your last life, to reborn as you were, Nephilim.

Magnus totally crushes on Will from day 1. I got all mushy in that moment. He totally loves Will, but alas, Will has eyes only for Tessa Gray. It wouldn't be so bad if that moment might happen. Could you wrap your mind around the thought of Will and Magnus having more than just a moment?

Let's take a look at a moment from Clockwork Princess to see Will and Jem discuss this exact same issue:
Will rose slowly to his feet. He could not believe he was doing what he was doing, but it was clear that he was, clear as the silver rim around the black of Jem’s eyes. “If there is a life after this one,” he said, “let me meet you in it, James Carstairs.”

“There will be other lives.” Jem held his hand out, and for a moment, they clasped hands, as they had done during their parabatai ritual, reaching across twin rings of fire to interlace their fingers with each other. “The world is a wheel,” he said. “When we rise or fall, we do it together.”

Will tightened his grip on Jem’s hand, which felt thin as twigs in his. “Well, then,” he said, through a tight throat, “since you say there will be another life for me, let us both pray I do not make as colossal a mess of it as I have this one."

Another life for me...that's what Will said. Now, I could debate the fact that he said "me" versus saying "us", but I won't go there in this post.

Just thought I would add this picture of the Wheel of Transmigration for a visual. Isn't it lovely in a creeptastic way?

I asked what Cassie could do to appease the fandom with the death of Will? My answer is Alec Lightwood. I think Alec is Will reincarnated.

Before you throw up your hands in the air or quickly click off this post, think about it for just a few more moments. It makes more and more sense to me. It would be a punishment fitting, almost a delightful sense of irony, for Will to be a Lightwood - the one family he seems to detest. You have to struggle to reach enlightenment, so what better way for Will to become a better person than to walk a mile (or a lifetime) in his enemy's shoes.

Magnus recognizes Will in Alec so many times. How could I not have thought of this before?! Alec, in turn, is so freaked by the thought of Magnus having this eternal experience that it would be a great reveal to know that in this Wheel of Transmigration, this act of samsara, Alec actually was with Magnus before as Will. Those same blue eyes...that same dark hair. To me, this would be the only cure to mend our broken hearts if Will dies.

I then am reminded of a snippet from City of Lost Souls when Magnus and Isabelle are arguing, and I'm struggling with what it all could be leading to:
“I know about parabatai,” said Magnus, his voice rising in pitch. “I’ve known parabatai so close they were almost the same person; do you know what happens, when one of them dies, to the one that’s left—”

It's crazy...right???? I've been debating Tale of Two Cities, just knowing more and more that Will is going to bite the big one, but maybe, just maybe, that might make it all better...if Will became Alec and we finally get the Will/Magnus ship we've secretly all craved in the form of Malec.

Here's my song for my Will and Magnus ship just in case anyone wants to listen to it!!! :)

MUSIC MONDAY #21: The definitive Will Herondale playlist

As you've probably been able to tell, one of my favorite things to do is look for songs that remind me of Cassandra Clare's books and characters. So, in thinking of the end of The Infernal Devices series, I thought it might be cool to go to fans and see what songs define their favorite characters.

Let's start the first of this series with William Herondale. He comes across as rude and arrogant, always utilising his quick wit and sarcasm. He is aware of his good looks and uses it to get his way. This is in fact a front that he uses to keep everyone at arms-length. He is actually caring and would risk his life for the people he loves. He is also self-sacrificing.

I'll kick this off with my pick with something a little lighter that reminds me of Will early on:

Will Herondale in new Shadowhunter Tarot

Here's the newest in the Shadowhunter Tarot with some info from author Cassandra Clare: Will as the Nine of Steles from the Shadowhunter Tarot. (Yes, we’re going to do every single card for a complete deck. If you haven’t seen your favorite character yet: you will. There’s room for everyone, and repeats of some of the most important.) There’s a little Clockwork Princes clue in here too if you look.

Theory Tuesday: Bloggers discuss Will Herondale predictions

We all have very anxious feels about what will happen in the final Infernal Devices book Clockwork Princess. So, in a way to hash out the theories (reader bewarned if you haven't read the series... we may talk spoilers), I've enlisted the help of some of my favorite bloggers (@TMIShadwhunters, @TMI_colombia, @TMIspanishnews, @shannoncatori, @TMICanada and @ThePaisleyOwl) to discuss our predictions and debate some of your favorite theories.

FIRST UP: Let's talk about William Herondale.

AMBER, The Mortal Institute:
“It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known." Charles Dickens

When I look at Will Herondale, I see a reflection of Sydney Carton, a protagonist in the Dickens classic "A Tale of Two Cities". In the novel, Sydney is a lawyer characterized as lazy and drunk who takes very little interest in life. He just plainly doesn't seem to care about anyone or anything. Sound a bit familiar? Sydney comes to represent prisoner Charles Darnay. Darnay is in love with Lucie Mannette, but we find out the Sydney also has formed an unrequited love for Lucie. (See where I'm going with this?)

Anyway, Sydney talks to Charles a bit about Lucie. Though he comes off rather rude and bitter, you can tell he has feelings for her. He later tells Lucie he loves her, and that he'll do anything for her and for those she loves. Well, this plan doesn't work. Is any of this ringing a bell? Lucie plans to marry Charles anyway. To make a long story short, Charles is sentenced to the guillotine, and Will (I mean Sydney) makes an ultimate sacrifice by taking Charles' place underneath the blade.

Now, I have no idea how Cassie Clare end the series, but it's possible that Will is facing a Dickens' style fate. We know a lot of times modern day writers take the classic plots and work them into new, interesting novels. I'm really interested to see what twist Cassie puts in this final tale of Will Herondale.

TITA, TMI Spanish News: I'm scared... really scared of what will happen to Will in Clockwork Princess... >.<
CELINE, TMI Canada: I. Just. Don’t. Know. I’m staring at my clock trying to figure out the future of Will Herondale, and many unorganized scenarios rush into my mind:
I feel like if Jem dies, Will would not continue to chase after Tessa.
Then, I think, perhaps there’s hope that somehow Jem encourages Will to marry Tessa because he is dying.
At the same time I feel, Will is going to do something spontaneous –something we would never see coming- like become a silent brother…
Another thought is Will runs away and that’s when he says “If there is a life after this one,” he said, “let me meet you in it, James Carstairs.
But as I re-read the snippet, “Will rose slowly to his feet. He could not believe he was doing what he was doing, but it was clear that he was, clear as the silver rim around the black of Jem’s eyes… Jem held his hand out, and for a moment, they clasped hands, as they had done during their parabatai ritual, reaching across twin rings of fire to interlace their fingers with each other.” It seems as if Will is about to commit to something that could end his life.

SARAH, The Mortal Institute: I actually think that Will's ending will be quiet and sort of happy. I think that his love for Jem is greater than his love for Tessa, meaning no matter what happens to Jem he wouldn't go after Tessa. I mean, Jace is a Herondale, so we know that the bloodline continues. I would like to think that Will finds his love of his life and has a long and happy life and children.

SATIN, The Mortal Institute: I have no clue at all as to where Will's life is headed, but what I do know is that the Herondale bloodline is continued because we of course are blessed with Jace Herondale. This pretty much means that he and Tessa do not end up together. I believe that Will will end up happy. I do know one thing, Will deserves happiness and I hope that he gets it.

LILIANA, TMI Colombia: I love Will Herondale. He´s maybe my favorite TID character, but honestly, if I can be sure of one thing right now, is that we won´t have a happy ending on Clockwork Princess, and we won’t have a happy ending for Will Herondale. He is going to suffer for sure. If Jem dies, part of him will die with Jem. And for respect of Jem’s memory, he won´t have a relationship with Tessa.
If Jem survive, he will have to swallow his feelings for Tessa and maybe join to the Silent Brothers or die alone…
Can I say that all the theories are killing me?

SHANNON, The Mortal Institute: I think regardless of if Will ends up with Tessa or Jem does, in the end of Clockwork Princess, Will would have learned what it truly means to love and be loved. We know he loves Tessa and wants to have a life with her but he also loves Jem and is willing to do whatever necessary to keep Jem alive. And I could see Will sacrificing himself for the ones he loves, to ensure their happiness which ultimately brings him happiness too.

Next week, we discuss our final theories on Jem Carstairs. Please feel free to comment in the box below or tweet us to share your thoughts on the final predictions for our main TID characters.

SHADOWHUNTER SATURDAY: Final predictions on #WillHerondale

As we draw near to the end of THE INFERNAL DEVICES series, we find ourselves constantly forming end-game theories on our main characters. Now that we've seen the book trailer for Clockwork Princess, it's time to share those final predictions!

Here's the game plan. Starting this Saturday, February 23 at 11 am EST, we will devote our Twitter party to discuss end game theories on #WillHerondale, the beloved Shadowhunter who hides his love for Tessa Gray to make his dying parabatai, Jem Carstairs, happy.

Once we gather your theories (make sure to put in the hashtag in your tweet so I can find them), we will put together the top theories and discuss in an upcoming post. I'll also plan ShadowChat discussions via youtube!

Plan to join us for this Twitter party and look forward to who we plan to discuss next week!

New 'Clockwork Princess' snippet!

We are very close to March 19, the release date of Clockwork Princess. Cassandra Clare took to her Tumblr to give us another snippet.

Charlotte shook her head. “There is a need here for mercy and pity. Jessamine is not what she once was — as any of you would know if you had visited her in the Silent City.”
“I have no wish to visit with traitors,” said Will.

You can still pre-order your copy of Clockwork Princess at Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

SHADOWHUNTER TAROT CARD series posted via Tumblr

Cassandra Jean, an illustrator known for her work within the young adult book genre, has created a set of Shadowhunter Tarot cards. There will be 22 in the series in all starting with The Dark Artifices.

Cassie Clare, author of the Shadowhunter Chronicle books The Infernal Devices, The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices shared thoughts on each one.

Cassie: (Isn’t Jules adorable?) They don’t have the same titles as the Major Arcana of the real Tarot, but you can see by their numbers what cards they match up to (Julian, #4, matches The Emperor.)

Cassie: Emma, the Warrior, matches the Empress card. That’s right, my baby, you look tough.

Cristina, looking fierce with her butterfly knife, taking the card of the High Priestess.

Cassie: We’re further into the Arcana, with the characters from other series showing up. Here Will takes the place of the Hanged Man, bound in an impossible situation.

Cassie: Here Jace takes the place of the Strength Card, only as an angel.

Cassie also said, "A couple of people have asked me if there’s any plans to sell the Shadowhunter Tarot but it hadn’t crossed my mind, really! They’re meant to be fun — maybe Cassandra and I can figure out a way to make them downloadable/printable.

We will post more from the set as they become available. What's your favorite one so far? Be sure to let us know in the comments below.

Magnus, Jace and Will make VH1's Top 25 Dazzling Supernatural Characters of 2012!

VH1 has come up with a list of 25 of the top Supernatural characters. Three of Cassandra Clare's from The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices have made the list. Jace Wayland, Will Herondale and Magnus Bane all made their list.

Magnus Bane is the High Warlock of Brooklyn in both The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices.

Will Herondale is a shadowhunter in The Infernal Devices.

Jace Wayland, a ever so arrogant shadowhunter in The Mortal Instruments.

Go on over to VH1 and vote for our beautiful boys. Magnus is in second place, Jace in third and Will in forth. We need them all to be at the top!
