Clockwork Princess: Immortality at a price

Cassandra Clare posted a very thoughtful response to a question regarding the ending of Clockwork Princess. The book, due out in 2013, will finally provide us with the fate of Will Herondale, Jem Carstairs, and the love of both their lives: Tessa Gray.

Blindmewithstars asked you:
Do you consider the ending of Clockwork Princess to be a happy one, or are we going to be sitting with boxes of tissues and a runny nose, exploding from all the feels?
It can’t be happy and have feels? :)
I think it’s bittersweet. I think given the kind of story it’s been there has to be loss, and of a serious nature. I think if immortality is going to be presented as a gift that comes with a price you have to see the price. I think you can pick up the thematic threads as they’ve been presented so far and even if you can’t guess what will happen exactly in the end, guess what kind of thematic end it will be.
No matter the outcome, I'm sure that we will all be shedding tears for the ending of this phenomenal series. To make a great work of fiction, one must sometimes lay their hero or darlings down on the sacrificial altar. Although most fear that the person to be sacrificed this time will be Jem, I find it interesting that she mentioned immortality. What exactly would Jem have to give up for that price? Would he have to give up Will? Would Will lay down his life for Jem and Tessa's happiness? I personally could see it, and to me this would make him the one of the most amazing tragic characters in YA literature.

Please share your thoughts with me! I'd love to know what you think!

  1. Personally, I believe that Jem will become Br. Zachariah. The Silent Brothers are still kind of a mystery, but we know that they used to be Shadowhunters and that they go through some sort of process that changes them fundamentally... It's quite possible that they are immortal (although, I don't think it's been explicitly stated in any of the current books), and there are some very obvious consequences and sacrifices that go along with becoming a Brother. I believe that the process could heal Jem of his terrible addiction and save his life, but at the price of losing Tessa and Will to live in the Bone City forever.
